There were a lot of glass spheres at the front of the class. And paper. And pitchers of something watery. And toothpicks. And--

"Today," Jim said, with fiendish determination, "We are going to be talking about the universe. It's really, really big. It's so big you can't see stuff on the other end. You could say we can't tell what it looks like, buuuut that'd be wrong."

He held up a snowglobe. It had the Eiffel Tower and a little plastic cow in it. "This is what the universe looks like!" He grinned. Like an idiot. "We're all living in a giant snowglobe, kids! Now remember that snowglobes aren't indestructable, no matter what the nice made in China people put on the label. You wanna make sure," he tapped the edge of the globe. A little hard. "That it doesn't break. Because that would be bad."

He pointed at the tables. "So today, we are learning about snowglobes!" He was very enthusiastic. "Have at, you wee cow-clobbering, snow-loving defenders of the cosmos! Make your snowglobe SHINE!" Pause. "But don't use anything radioactive, that might violate my parole."

Did he even have parole? He'd have to call Peter.

"I'm only doing it because he told me to," Ino insisted. "Otherwise this whole thing would've been totally totally avoided."

A beat.

"But, uh, you catching my drift here?"

There was a long silence. A very long silence. Gladys processed all that and then her eyes flared brightly as the drift was, in fact, caught. "The Teacher Is Not Polite Company," she intoned, her voice a low rumble. "I Believe He May Have A Diseased Mind. I Am A Lady. To Say Such A Thing Is Very Wrong."

"Yes, right. Sorry, but I had to, as punishment, you see? And, uh, I think he's about as genuinely concerned as he can be? Unless he's forgotten already, which he might've considering his infatuation with snowglobes."

"There Is No Apology Necessary. You Were Obeying The Teacher." Gladys' gaze drifted to Jim. "It Was Very Wrong Of Him To Make You Ask Such A Question. I Will Speak With Him."

"Um. Okay?" Ino figured that was good enough. "Am I guessing that it's a negative what he's thinking then?"

Gladys' voice dropped even lower, low enough that the water in the snowglobe sloshed, and the desk she was standing next to vibrated slightly. "Yes."

"Good," Ino said, nodding. "Not, mind, that I really wanted to know, but if he asked me, I'd need an answer." A beat. "You know?"

"Yes," she repeated, in a much more level tone. "You Must Do As You Are Told. There Are No Hard Feelings."

"Excellent." She offered Gladys a smile. "So, like, you keep up the good work with that snowglobe, yeah? And I'll go work on mine and totally talk to you later."

"I Will Keep Up The Good Work," she replied. "And Look Forward To Talking To You Later."
