“Let’s talk about climates today,” Juli said, leaning back in her chair. “The weather, if any of you don’t know what I’m talking about.” She was simplifying, yes. Not that she had a low opinion of some of her students’ intelligence or anything. But after last week, Juli wasn’t inclined to think highly of half her class.

“I’m used to, frankly--the climate I’m the most used to is one that’s entirely regulated and controlled--always the perfect temperature, never any need to complain about the heat or tug on an extra thick sweater. Of course, I’m well aware that most of you probably aren’t from the same situation. Can you see where this is going?”

She smiled slightly. “What are you used to then? What aren’t you used to? What do you like? What don’t you like? Discuss this at your will, and compare differences. What’s the most common climate between you all? The least common?”

Juli tapped her fingers thoughtfully. “You may all begin. Mr. Murdock, Miss Emmagan, and Mr. Next, I’d like to speak to you after the discussion about your absences last week.” Her voice had cooled slightly with the last sentence.

"Work the kinks out?" Juli questioned. "What sort of kinks?"

The scientist in her was interested.

"They said that the system would give one consistent day-to-day temperature, and it did. It was 16° C for the entire month of July, when the normal daytime high would have been 26°," explained Hoshi. "Plus they had to balance out the optimum number of rainy days vs. sunny days so the farmers and the tour operators were happy. It's just tough to make everyone happy."

She laughed. "Everyone is never happy. It's all but impossible. Once it was all set up though, did that mean you got your weather forecast far in advance? Could you know what it'd be like, rain or shine, say... three months down the line?"

"It was pretty cool," said Hoshi, nodding. "You could even submit requests for weather, as long as you did it well in advance for scheduling. Every Saturday in June was sunny because of all the weddings and it always snowed on Christmas Eve."

Juli's lips quirked. "How severe was the weather allowed to be requested?" Not that she thought that could be abused or anything.

"Well, you had to get it approved by the civil authorities for the prefecture, and they wouldn't allow anything really severe," explained Hoshi.

"Of course," she said mildly. "Does this mean severe weather was eliminated altogether? Or was that scheduled as well?"

"It was pretty much eliminated," said Hoshi. "I mean, who wants to see Tokyo get leveled by a cyclone?"

"I suppose that's true enough," Juli said, "though it is certainly a great deal of power to be in the hands of people."

"They have the power to do much worse, actually," said Hoshi. "But humanity learned that there's a price to pay for the abuse of power in the third world war."

"They always have the power to do worse," Juli noted. "And sometimes, no matter how well the lesson is learnt some must relearn it all over again."

She shook her head slightly.

Hoshi sincerely hoped that wasn't the case ~~since Trek canon seems to assume that humans are perfect~~.
