“Let’s talk about climates today,” Juli said, leaning back in her chair. “The weather, if any of you don’t know what I’m talking about.” She was simplifying, yes. Not that she had a low opinion of some of her students’ intelligence or anything. But after last week, Juli wasn’t inclined to think highly of half her class.

“I’m used to, frankly--the climate I’m the most used to is one that’s entirely regulated and controlled--always the perfect temperature, never any need to complain about the heat or tug on an extra thick sweater. Of course, I’m well aware that most of you probably aren’t from the same situation. Can you see where this is going?”

She smiled slightly. “What are you used to then? What aren’t you used to? What do you like? What don’t you like? Discuss this at your will, and compare differences. What’s the most common climate between you all? The least common?”

Juli tapped her fingers thoughtfully. “You may all begin. Mr. Murdock, Miss Emmagan, and Mr. Next, I’d like to speak to you after the discussion about your absences last week.” Her voice had cooled slightly with the last sentence.

Who isn't particularly impressed with half her class.

Jeff came up to Juli by the end of it, held up a shaking hand in greeting, and stared down at the floor. "Distracted. I was! By parts."

Juli raised her eyebrows. "Excuse me, Mr. Murdock?"

"There was an arse," Jeff replied, focusing really really hard don't look up, Jeffrey on one of the little-- squiggly bits, "It sort of--" What? Sort of what? "--Expanded--" What? Expanded how?! How could an arse expand? What would it have to do with the whole subject at hand?! "--To fill time."

Juli brought one hand up to cover her mouth, it wouldn't do to start to smile, and leaned back in her chair.

"And this time just happened to be while my class was in session?"

"Y-- yeah," Jeff mumbled. A shiver of bone-deep fear wracked his body. "I didn't have hooves," he blurted, "And she had an arse. It was sort of an occasion."

"An occasion," she repeated mildly.

Several thousand thoughts flew through Jeff's brain. Possible excuses, lofty pleas, defensive statements... they welled up in his throat, crawled through his nerves and choked him thoroughly.

"With arses," he added, helpfully.

Juli eyed him for a long moment, wondering what she'd done to deserve both Mr. Murdock and Giselle in the same class at the same time.

"Is it going to happen again?" A moments pause as she considered the possible ways he could manage to answer that. "During the time when you should be in class." Better. She hoped.

One tentative hand went up for Jeff's hair, and he rubbed firmly. "I'd have to ask it," he said, finally. "Her. I'd have to ask her. Arses don't talk."

...

"I should hope not," she said, sounding faintly horrified. "And is she the one that makes all the decisions, then?"

"I think it's probably better for everyone, really," Jeff said, apologetically, and rubbed the back of his head harder.

"Inform Miss Wexler that I'd much appreciate it if it didn't happen again," Juli said crisply. "And complete an ~~entirely handwavy~~ essay for me on the proper way to spend time that is scheduled for class."

It was clear, in her opinion, that there was only one answer to that.

"Is that clear Mr. Murdock?"

He squinted his eyes shut.

Very very shut.

"...I'm sorry, mother."

...Juli made note to visit Caritas that night. She was going to need it.

"I'm not your mother," she said, even more crisply. "And you didn't answer my question."

Oh, she was using the tone. Oh god. He trembled a little in place, but he was suddenly grasped by this paralyzing fear and there was really only one response to that--

"...Yes, mother!"

He paused, tried to wrench one of his eyes open--

"...Professor Mizrahi."

She eyed him.

"Go," Juli said, "go and do... whatever else you've got to do. You're giving me a headache."

"Okay," Jeff said, meekly, and drooped off.

Teyla looked nervous as she approached Juli. "I apologize for missing class last week," she said. "I was not feeling well ~~and I was internetless, woe!~~ and had to miss all my classes. Is there anything I can do to make up the work?"

"Presumably you're feeling better, this week?" Juli asked, mildly relieved that this, at least, was a regular sort of excuse.

"Much better, yes," Teyla said. "I think I would have come even if I was still not feeling well."

She was winning points back with Juli. Just a bit. "At the very least, try to inform me before class if you are not planning to attend because of illness. It's diconcerting when people you expect to show do not."
