Look Like You Belong: Period 3, Week 3

"Afternoon, everyone," Aly said with a smile as she came up to the Main Campfire where the students were handwavily advised they were meeting. She was carrying two large boxes with two vaguely ammunition-looking cases on top of them. She could barely see over this pile, yes. Setting the boxes down without ever really looking like she was going to drop them, Aly turned to the class again.

"Last week we talked about ideas about how you could start blending into different scenarios. Today, we're going to start putting it into effect. You're not going to actually give it a try yet, but instead, I want you to think of a scenario - by yourself or with a partner - and dress to fit into that scenario.

"The whole point of a disguise is to be unnoticeable in the company that you're keeping. To blend in so that you don't occasion comments like 'I've never seen that person before' and 'I wonder who invited her.' It's not a matter of satisfying your ego by 'standing out' so everyone notices you.

When you go undercover - when you're trying to blend in, you succeed only if you convince everyone around you that you're a different person. And you can only do that if every detail is consistent. Every single bit of information from the trash in your pockets to your glasses to your story has to match. If you're masquerading as a dissident student, you probably shouldn't be driving a fancy car or wearing expensive shoes. Be consistent. And blend in. The key isn't to be quirky and distinctive. The key is to be nondescript."

She looked around to see if anyone had any questions then handed around a sheet of paper. "While you're thinking up a disguise, I want you to read through this quickly. What do you think of the idea of training agents like that to blend into the crowd of passengers. Is it an effective way to maintain security? Would uniforms be better? What are they trying to achieve?"

[OOC: Wait for the OCD please? Thank you, OCD is up! *hopes stolen internets keep working!*]

Romeo listened carefully, thinking about if he could do nondescript.

Wes listens carefully, because while his father never approved of dressing outlandishly, he'd instilled in Wes the idea that people ought to take notice of him when he walks in to a room. So nondescript is something of a new idea. At the comment regarding shoes, he glances down at his own rather expensive dress shoes and grins somewhat sheepishly.

Jack was looking around. He totally belonged in this class.

Gwen listened carefully to the lecture.

Michael knew at least one way to be nondescript, but he was listening anyway.

Liir was considering the assignment.

He's certainly failed at this this weekend...

Dōjima was listening, but was tapping her fingers against her notebook. She had been taught that one should always dress to impress, or to at least highlight your natural assets. The idea of being in the backround was completely alien to her.

Gladys was standing at the back, as per usual, looking not at all optimistic at the activity. Of course, it was hard to tell the difference with a golem, but the glow in her eyes was flickering.

Re: The Article

It took some thought before Romeo answered. "If they wore uniforms," he said, "They'd be obvious as security, and passengers might simply refrain from malicious acts in their presence. By blending in -- and letting it be known they are doing so -- they intimidate all passengers, in that everyone is aware there may be air marshalls on any flight."

"It'd be useful if you don't have the numbers of marshals you'd like," Gwen said. "Something of a bluff to keep people in line."

Re: The Article

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-05-27 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"People are always more frightened of what they don't know. If they're aware there are these air marshals," he said, thinking just a little of home, of the Wizard and Shell and all the damnable secrets, "but don't know what they look like or if they might be there or not, they're more likely to behave.

"To take it one step further, if there is someone who's going to take malicious action, who wouldn't be put off, their secrecy will protect the marshals and allow them to do their job more efficiently."

Which, as far as he was concerned, wasn't always a good thing, considering, but it was still true.

"They Are Lying. Pretending To Be Something That They Are Not. That Seems Wrong."

"Ano, if I do not see anyone to deter me, I am more inclined to be naughty," Dōjima said. "Impulsive mischief is not going to be deterred by the vague idea someone might be watching."

"The best deterrent," Seregil said after some thought, "would be a mixture of the two approaches. Have some visible in uniform as a reminder that there is a presence, but also have some just among the passengers to catch things by those troublemakers bright enough to avoid those in uniform."

Romeo started rummaging through the trunks, setting aside some slightly Victorian clothes for the simple reason that they seemed as though they might fit him well.

Zuko would argue the whole needing love thing, but then he's not Deadpool and can't read the meta so there was no arguing there.

So he was there, not arguing. Well, unless you talked to him then he might end up arguing anyway.
