Look Like You Belong: Period 3, Week 3

"Afternoon, everyone," Aly said with a smile as she came up to the Main Campfire where the students were handwavily advised they were meeting. She was carrying two large boxes with two vaguely ammunition-looking cases on top of them. She could barely see over this pile, yes. Setting the boxes down without ever really looking like she was going to drop them, Aly turned to the class again.

"Last week we talked about ideas about how you could start blending into different scenarios. Today, we're going to start putting it into effect. You're not going to actually give it a try yet, but instead, I want you to think of a scenario - by yourself or with a partner - and dress to fit into that scenario.

"The whole point of a disguise is to be unnoticeable in the company that you're keeping. To blend in so that you don't occasion comments like 'I've never seen that person before' and 'I wonder who invited her.' It's not a matter of satisfying your ego by 'standing out' so everyone notices you.

When you go undercover - when you're trying to blend in, you succeed only if you convince everyone around you that you're a different person. And you can only do that if every detail is consistent. Every single bit of information from the trash in your pockets to your glasses to your story has to match. If you're masquerading as a dissident student, you probably shouldn't be driving a fancy car or wearing expensive shoes. Be consistent. And blend in. The key isn't to be quirky and distinctive. The key is to be nondescript."

She looked around to see if anyone had any questions then handed around a sheet of paper. "While you're thinking up a disguise, I want you to read through this quickly. What do you think of the idea of training agents like that to blend into the crowd of passengers. Is it an effective way to maintain security? Would uniforms be better? What are they trying to achieve?"

Romeo listened carefully, thinking about if he could do nondescript.

It took some thought before Romeo answered. "If they wore uniforms," he said, "They'd be obvious as security, and passengers might simply refrain from malicious acts in their presence. By blending in -- and letting it be known they are doing so -- they intimidate all passengers, in that everyone is aware there may be air marshalls on any flight."

Romeo started rummaging through the trunks, setting aside some slightly Victorian clothes for the simple reason that they seemed as though they might fit him well.

Wes listens carefully, because while his father never approved of dressing outlandishly, he'd instilled in Wes the idea that people ought to take notice of him when he walks in to a room. So nondescript is something of a new idea. At the comment regarding shoes, he glances down at his own rather expensive dress shoes and grins somewhat sheepishly.

"But they'd be better off if they were in uniform, knowing that they were there. I mean, it's not like they could put a marshal or whatever on each flight, right?"

Jack found some glasses, and a snazzy suit. Perfect!

"It'd be useful if you don't have the numbers of marshals you'd like," Gwen said. "Something of a bluff to keep people in line."
