Inara carefully selected a piece of pineapple and took a small bite before answering Kaylee. "No, I've been here for almost a year. It was a bit of a culture shock when I first arrived."

She leaned over and confided, "The cabins were unlike anything I'd ever seen on Shinon."

"Beylix," she answered, grinning and pointing to herself. "Someone from home, finally! Kinda. I mean, same galaxy, anyhow."

"Found an ad to apply, did, talked my parents into it," Kaylee said, shrugging happily. "What 'bout you?"

"I won a lottery," Inara smiled, realizing that she finally didn't feel like coming here was a punishment. "To make me a better Companion, at least in theory."

It wasn't judgment. It was reverence.

"But still!" Kaylee was kind of gushing. "Never met a real one before."

"Well, I'm happy I could be that person, then," Inara wasn't sure how to take all the attention, but didn't want to offend Kaylee either. "Even if I have a very long way to go."

Kaylee tried to resist the urge to add something about how she talked so fancy and how impressed she was, but she toned it down a bit so she wouldn't seem too much like a hick. "So you like it here?"

Inara might have released a quiet, relieved breath that Kaylee seemed to accept that explanation. "Very much. The people are nice, and it's very seldom boring--sometimes even too much so. Plus, there's all the fruit we could want to eat."

"My big sister -- not my real one, don't got one of those -- told me 'bout all the weird stuff that goes on 'round here," Kaylee said, nodding. "Like these gremlin thingies, and how there's magic and aliens and stuff!"

"Yes, but there are also completely mundane activities like dances and parties and relaxing on beaches with friends and boyfriends, too," she laughed, "so it's still a normal high school. Just with a little bit extra."
