Lion-o was actually relieved to see that someone had a cat. Not the same type of cat that he was used to, and this one didn't look like it spoke, but still, it was something familiar.

"Hello," Alice said cheerfully, nodding to the ... boy? Cat-boy. Hmm. This island appeared to have cat-boys. How fascinating. "Have you met Dinah? She's friendly but not all that communicative. Only meows and growls and purrs."

As soon as the words left her mouth, she blushed. And found herself hoping rather desperately that cat-boys spoke English, and she hadn't committed a rather rude faux pas.

"Well, meows and growls and purrs can communicate a lot," said Lion-o, crouching down so he was on Dinah's level. "Hi there, Dinah. My name's Lion-o and it's my first day here."

"You're right, do please apologize to Dinah for my blatant species-ism," Alice nodded. "I only meant that we muddle along without a common tongue, her and I."

Dinah sniffed in Lion-o's direction. Human shaped but the scent was distinctly feline. She wandered closer, intrigued.

"That's okay. There aren't a lot of humans where I come from, so I've never really spent any time with them," said Lion-o. "My father can actually talk to cats and they do as he commands! I... haven't quite figured it out yet."

"We're an odd sort, humans," she said, nodding calmly. "Although I suppose that can change depending on how you define 'odd.' I've no idea how catpeople are, perhaps we're strikingly similar and will seem very normal indeed. And I hope your father only commands them to do good things. I shouldn't like for someone to boss Dinah around for their own purposes."

"I've definitely met some Thunderians who were odd," said Lion-o. "And my father is the Lord of the Thundercats, so he only commands people to do good things. He says that one should not abuse power and that being a leader is about helping people, not commanding them to do your bidding."

Lion-o's face lit up as he talked about his father. Someone was going to have a problem with homesickness.

Alice lifted an eyebrow at the boy's speech. "Bold words, but it's far easier to say such things than to follow them. Power brings temptations. Little ones. Excuse it with "for their own good" and they're easier to swallow."

Dinah was still sniffing curiously at the boy's feet. Strange scent, she couldn't place it.

Lion-o smiled timidly. "You sound just like Lord Jaga. He's my father's closest adviser and the best warrior of all the Thundercats," he said.

Alice flushed, dropping her eyes to her lap. "I'm no warrior," she said, shaking her head. "The gryphon, perhaps, he was brave. I only fight when need says I must."

Lion-o nodded. "Jaga says the same thing, that one must fight only when necessary. But we get attacked a lot by the mutants of the planet Plundarr, so we have to do a lot of fighting back to protect ourselves."

"Sometimes the only defense is a good offense," Alice mused. "And I sound far more innocent than I feel. There's something to the thrill of the hunt, the victory of blade over skin. One could develop a taste for it rather quickly."

"Cats do a lot of hunting. It's in their nature," said Lion-o. "But Father says that even so, we mustn't give in to the thrill of the hunt."

Alice missed her vorpal blade, stuck in the school Weapons Locker. It was hers, she shouldn't have to turn it over. Streaked with crimson, her silvery friend, the only one the Red Queen hadn't destroyed, in the end. But that was past her now. Mostly.

"I wish you luck at that," she smiled. "Hunts can be tempting."

Dinah finally gave a puzzled mew at Lion-O. Hello?

Lion-o grinned. "Hello there," he said to Dinah. "Guess you haven't met a cat who can talk back. Actually, my Snarf is a little bit better at it than I am."

He smiled at Alice. "I guess I'm supposed to learn how to not be tempted. I accidentally interrupted a bit important council meeting by making faces at the other nobles."

Dinah purred happily and wriggled onto her back. Belly-rub requests were largely universal.

Alice laughed. "I don't think that's exactly the same temptation."
