Ella gave the girl in the pinafore a smile. It was a familiar style, albeit one she hadn't worn since childhood. "Extremely," she answered. "I'd be so embarrassed if I tried to go about half-naked like that, that I doubt I should leave my own bedroom."

Scandalized, she added, "and I hear one of the girls has taken her shirt off!"

"You would think, from looking about, that we're in some terribly tropical location where it's far too hot for anyone to stay clothed at all," Alice frowned, looking at the crowd again. "I've seen grown women sunbathing who wear more."

She blushed before adding, "If you ever see me in public without a shirt, for pity's sake lend me one, for I've clearly been attacked by vicious bandersnatches who've stolen it."

"One must watch for bandersnatches," Ella teased. "I hear they're quite fond of ladies' clothing."

"I wonder if this is how vicious rumors get started," Alice laughed. "In three weeks, someone will be telling me in confidence about a horrible bandersnatch attack and how it thoroughly disgraced some young lady and ruined her best dress."

Ella laughed. "And then they'll start selling charms designed to protect clothing from bandersnatches, and everyone will snatch them up by the armful."

"If one were enterprising," Alice mused, "one might create the charms first, then spread the rumors, and swoop in to take advantage of the panic. So long as no one wondered why one so conveniently had bandersnatch charms, only two pounds each."

Ella let out a peal of laughter. "Poor maligned bandersnatches," she said. "I'm Ella, by the way. Are you another new student?"

"I am," she smiled, offering a hand to the other girl. "Alice Liddell. I got here this morning. I was told it would be Virginia, but we seem to be in Greece. I was also told that such things happen, on this island, though thankfully, no signs of dress-stealing bandersnatches."

"I'd never heard of Virginia or Greece, so I suppose it's all one to me," Ella told her. "Are they terribly far apart, normally?"

"About an ocean, give or take," Alice said, rocking on her heels again. She always seemed to when fidgeting. "I've no idea how big the ocean it. It might be small, as oceans go. I'd heard of both but never been to either. Are you from another world entirely, then?"

"It would seem so?" Ella guessed. "Kyrria is one of the kingdoms, and they all float in a great ocean."

"So this is your world, then." Though the girl had a different accent than any Ella had met yet.

"It is," Alice said. "I believe so, at least. I've heard of Virginia and Greece, it would be odd to end up somewhere else entirely with both. Odd, but not impossible, we shouldn't rule that out. This world has several oceans, although I imagine they all connect up sooner or later. I should have crossed one, getting to Virginia from England, but as Virginia was kind enough to come to Greece, I didn't have to. Much shorter trip that way."
