Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

"Oooh, those are good," Sokka told her, pointing at the bits of meat she was stuffing away. He reached past her to grab a few of some sort of cheese-filled pastry hors d'oeuvre of some kind. "...Do you have a CAT in there???"

Alice froze mid-nibble. She decided she might as well continue the nibble and swallow. There. Now to work on the freezing.

"Of course not," she scoffed, popping another slice of salami into her mouth. "Don't be ridiculous."

The suitcase meowed once again.

"... Incidentally," Alice asked, as casually as she could muster. "Would you happen to know if pets are allowed at this school?"

Sokka chuckled. "Incidentally," he informed her, "and entirely unrelated to your suitcase at all, yes they are. Lots of people have cats, or dogs. I have a chinchilla."

Alice was going to be dreadfully rude for a moment and disregard his conversation (and presence) entirely, kneeling to open her suitcase and remove a mangy, underfed cat from within.

"Yes, you were very good on the train," she murmured, dropping a kiss on the back of Dinah's (that was the cat's name, you see, Dinah) neck. "You hardly mewed at all. Look, I've found you some meat."

Sokka looked down at the scrawny little thing. "She could definitely use some, huh. Is she okay?"

"She'll be all right," Alice frowned, setting her plate down on the ground. There. Dinah was welcome to anything she saw fit to eat, and Alice would get herself more later. She brushed her hands off and stood again, watching to make sure Dinah didn't turn her nose up entirely. "She's had a rough patch, but we're doing much better now."

"That's... good to hear," Sokka told her, still a little concerned. (More for the cat than for Alice, but still.) "So... new here, huh? How are you liking it so far?"

"Well, it's only been an hour or two, but it's certainly met with my approval so far." She clasped her hands behind her back and began rocking, heel to toe and heel again, on the heels of her boots, as she always did when restless. "It seems a very nice island. The weather's nice, and the food's quite good. I haven't had any classes yet, so I can't rate those. How are you liking it, so far? However long that may be?"

Sokka grinned. "I've been here a year and a half," he informed her, "and it's AWESOME!!! It's a bit weird, but you get used to it."

"Weird?" Alice mulled that over for a few moments. The hatter had been mad, but she wasn't sure if that was the same as weird. Disturbing, when Wonderland changed, but everyone was when Wonderland changed. "How do you define weird?"

After all, her normal might be someone else's weird, and vice versa. Baselines were useful.

Sokka gave it some thought. "Talking animals, people from the future, magic, robots, an invasion of bears with laser guns..." He shrugged. "Plus, up until last week, we were in Virginia."

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Talking animals aren't so strange. All animals talk, it's just that few are so kind as to learn English and communicate." Alice lifted a shoulder, eyes darting back to her cat, who was making short work of the salami. Good kitty. "Though perhaps it's unable and not unwilling, as I think Dinah would have a few things to say if she could. Magic, robots and armed bears, those I've yet to encounter. And a boy earlier said that we were in Greece."

So she really hadn't been to Virginia yet, had she? Curiouser and curiouser.

"Right, it's Greece, now, but we WERE in Virginia. And, seriously, in most worlds, animals don't talk. Unless they're really animal-shaped spirits." He shrugged. "So, yeah. LOTS of weird stuff."

"Animals talk all the time. You certainly heard Dinah asking me to let her out of that suitcase," Alice said with a playful smile. "How are animal-shaped spirits different from animals? Other than the obvious distinction and an apparent ability to speak, that is."

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"She wasn't talking, she was making noise with her mouth," Sokka replied. "There's sort of a big difference there. As for spirits..." He shrugged. "If you're asking how to tell them apart just by looking, you usually can't. But they're COMPLETELY different from animals."

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Only to you or I. I expect Dinah considers herself an excellent conversationalist." She shrugged at the latter. "If there's no way to tell by looking, I suppose I'll continue being polite to whatever animals I encounter, just to be safe."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Sokka shrugged. "That sounds like a good idea: always be nice to whatever animals you encounter, unless you're planning on eating them."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll keep that in mind," she smiled.
