Going still for a moment, Alec then spread his hands, giving Sam a very "yeah, I deserved that" look. "Satisfied?"

"Good. Really good, in fact," Sam said. "'Cause it really messed Dean up when you left, and I don't want to have to watch him go through that again."

"Which time?" Okay, so the question had seemed both less flippant and less of an opening for more Sam-abuse before he'd said it out loud. Grimacing, he jumped right back in. "--I mean, dude, it's not like I did it just to piss you off. I would liked to just stay, but it wasn't really an option."

"The first time," Sam said, sounding guilty as he thought about the last time Alec had left. "I know you didn't mean to mess with Dean, so you didn't mean to piss me off. Did you do what you set out to do? Is that why you're finally back?"
