Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

"Not even a little bit," Ella admitted. "And I hadn't heard of Wisconsin or Virginia, either. I'm happy to be here" -- because here meant not at home with her stepmother -- "but I do seem to be rather far from home."

"You get used it fairly quickly." Cimorene reassured her. "We're not in Virginia anymore, though. Somehow, graduation moved us to Greece. The library has some very nice maps." She added.

"There's a library?" Ella gleed, as Greece and Virginia were equally foreign to her. "I never get enough books."

"Oh it's wonderful and big." Cimorene gushed. "And organized so I don't have to do it. I don't think I'll manage to get through even a small part while I'm here." She sounded disappointed.

"At least that's a task to accomplish," Ella said brightly. "It's like me and languages - there's always another one to learn, no matter how I study."

"Latin's really big back home, for those who dabble in magic at least, so that's what I've been working on mostly. French is more acceptable for a princess, but what's the point? You can't cast spells in it." Cimorene said matter-of-factly. "They're keeping the library open over the summer, you should be able to get plenty of language books there."

"I'll be in there every chance I get," Ella promised. "Latin and French aren't among mine, though. I have good Ayorthaian, and fair Gnomic and Elfian, and some Ogrese. But whatever I can learn, I want to."

Cimorene frowned. "Most ogres I've met speak pretty good English. But it must be nice, being able to speak with people using the language they're most comfortable with. I don't think I've ever met any elves or gnomes. Your home must be really interesting."

Ella shuddered. "Ogres are awful, in any language. They eat people, and use their speech to convince them not to run away. I can't imagine how dangerous they would be in -- we call it Kyrrian, but it must be the same as your English. But elves are sweet, and gnomes are very friendly."

"Interesting," she added, "is one word for it."

"Our ogres aren't that bad. One carried off one of my sisters, but then she got married so it all ended well. And it was a lot quieter around without her constant fits. Actually, that might be why the ogre was so eager to have her be rescued..." Cimorene grinned. "Boring is just so ... boring."

[identity profile] ella-obeys.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"So she married the ogre, or she married her rescuer?" Ella asked to clarify. "I got kidnapped by ogres once, but I was able to get away. The prince came by with some knights."

Re: General Mingling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] makescherries.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Rescuer." Cimorene clarified. "I think ogres marry their own. You didn't have to marry the prince? When I ran away and went to work for a dragon, I had to resort to threatening to duel the prince's and knight's myself so that they would go away and not try to marry me." She paused. "I've been told I have weird problems."

Ella laughed. "I don't think he wants to marry me," she said, pushing the memory of their last conversation on the subject to the back of her head. He was just joking around, right? "And anyhow, I'm too young. He's called Prince Charmont, and he's actually a very good friend."

"We don't have dragons," she added. Woefully.

"You're lucky to have found a prince with a brain. I've found that usually they are quite dim and stubborn. Oh, and very sure of themselves. Not the best combination." Cimorene may have helped one off of a cliff, once. He got better. "Most people are really afraid of dragons, but I find them to be much more reasonable than say...princes and princesses."

[identity profile] ella-obeys.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think most of them are like that," Ella said. "My mother was nobility, and the banquets she had to go to always sounded like the dullest things known to man. Charm's just .... special." And from the way she blushed when she said that, it was clear she felt more than friendly toward him.

"I should like to meet a dragon, assuming she wouldn't roast me like a marshmallow."

Cimorene raised a brow but didn't comment. "Oh, I was worried about that too. One of the books she had had a very nice fire-proofing spell. It took a while to get it set up, but now? I'm very hard to set on fire."

"Which is much better than being flammable," Ella agreed, deadpan. "Especially if one befriends dragons."

Cimorene nodded. "And doesn't wish to become extra-crispy."
