Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Oh look, there were tables and chairs over here too, away from all the informational stuff. Enjoy the food!

There was eating to be had, so the being merry bit wasn't exactly hard.

Sokka hung out by the food table, waving at the newbies.

"Is all this food free?"

"Nope, five dollar surcharge," Sokka replied with a grin, holding out his hand.

Friday wasn't sure whether he was for real or not. "Seriously?"

Sokka snorted. "No, not seriously. Take as much as you want. There's ALWAYS free food to be had around here."

Friday grinned. "That's what I was hoping you'd say." He figured the biscuits had been free (everywhere gave out free tea and biscuits), but he hadn't been sure about the good stuff and whether they would charge it to his school account. "I'm Friday Next. Are you the food guardian?"

"Nope, just the guy who's standing here eating, and almost made five bucks off some chump." Sokka grinned and held out his hand. "Sokka. And... why does your name sound familiar?"

"My mum used to work here. Thursday Next. Might have heard of her." Friday shook Sokka's hand. "You think we could make some money standing here charging new people for food?"

"Right, the librarian!" Sokka exclaimed. He cocked his head and looked at Friday appraisingly. "You've grown since the last time I saw you."

He crossed his arms in a mock-huff. "Well, YOU could try to make money charging new people for food, but to me, that sounds like an awfully mean trick to pull. I refuse to be a part of it."

"Except for the part where you already tried it on me. Nice try, by the way." He was a little weirded out by Sokka having seen him before. "Humour me for a sec. What year is it?"

Sokka grinned. "It's 2008, right now. You've only been gone a few months. ...So, when are you from?"

"Huh. 2002. We went home to 1990 after we left here, I think. Weird, but not unheard of. So there's probably quite a few people around who'd remember me when I was still playing with wooden blocks. I've upgraded to Lego and Technics now."

"Well, to be fair, I only ever saw you a handful of times. We can pretend you're an entirely DIFFERENT Friday Next, if you'd rather?"

Hinata was... somewhat startled by the amount that people here seemed to enjoy their food. She still had half the plate of desserts that Cassandra had given her and blinked in surprise at the boy waving.

She automatically glanced behind her. Was there someone he was waving to?

Sokka raised an eyebrow at her. "You all right?" he asked, through a mouthful of potato chips.

She flushed and looked down. "A-ano," Hinata said, "just trying to see who you were waving to."

"Well... you. Everyone, really, but just now I was waving at you. Hi! You look new. And very, very lost."

Hinata rather wished it wasn't quite so obvious how new she was.

"V-ery new," she admitted, "and still getting my bearings."

"Oh, don't worry," Sokka told her in a soft, soothing tone. "That'll probably never happen -- the island makes sure of that. But you eventually learn to just roll with it. ... You, uh. Have you been given the whole 'this island is weird' speech?"

"A little?" she said hopefully. "Hoshi-san told m-me about avoiding a locker, and the portals, and about gremlins."

"Well... That's a start," Sokka told her. "Really, there's just a lot of WEIRD that goes on around here. I guess what I'm saying is, you look like you're about to spend a few weeks hiding under your bed, and really, this place is great and you shouldn't worry."

"There's just so many people," she admitted, ducking her head, "a-and Father sent me here without notice."

"Oooooh, that sucks. I'm sorry. Well, the people here are nice. And there's not usually a huge crowd like this; it's just 'cause it's newbie day."

She nodded and hoped he was right. "Ah!" Hinata flushed. "I-I forgot, I'm Hyuuga Hinata." Complete with flustered bow.

Sokka smacked himself in the face and then held out a hand. "Pleased to meet you, Hyuuga. I'm Sokka."
