Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was lovely thanks to the island's new location, and even though it had been less than a week, there was no sign anywhere on the school lawn that part of the land had sunk and collapsed during graduation.

That didn't stop everyone from setting things up away from where the graduates had been seated, of course.

There were tables and chairs and plenty of food and drinks, along with nametags, and three signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, one listing rooms and roommates for the new students, and one listing the cabin assignments.

[WAIT FOR THE OCD PLEASE. OCD IS UP. This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"That's a reason a lot of people are here, I think," Summer replied. "Where are you from?"

It was best to get the simple questions out of the way.

"Michigan," Cal said, nodding, because that one was a lot easier to answer. "Detroit," he specified, and then, a little further, "well...Grosse Pointe, although we did live in a poorer area for a while. What about you?"
absolutesnark: (Curious)

"Newport Beach, California," Summer said. "I lived there my entire life."

Not exactly a poor area.

"My next question is probably one you'll be asked a lot," she continued. "When are you from?"

"Newport Beach?" Cal's head tilted at the mention of California. "That's probably not anywhere near San Francisco, is it?"

And then the rest of him caught up with Summer.

"Wait, did you ask...when?"
absolutesnark: (Uh huh)

"Closer to LA. In Orange County," Summer replied. "And, um, I did. As in, what year? I swear I'm not on drugs. Just so you know."

Cal gave Summer a rather dubious look at that, but he humored her all the same, because he'd lived with drug addicts, and knew when to humor them. When they claimed they weren't on them, for example. "Anno Domini 1974."
absolutesnark: (Hmmm)

Oh boy. At least he wasn't from medieval times or something. "Okay, I should explain some things to you, about the school? About this island, actually. People come here from all over. Including different times...and dimensions and stuff. And you probably do think I'm high."

She paused, realizing she might be rambling a bit. "You'll realize soon enough that I'm not."

She remembered her first day here and being told about gremlins and zombies. She'd leave that part out, for now.

"In my defense," Cal said as he eyed Summer for signs of sincerity and sobriety, "I hung out with a lot of Deadheads. Uh. So, uh." He scratched his chin a little. "Different times. And dimensions. Right. So all this means...?"
absolutesnark: (Buh?)

"Deadheads?" Summer blinked. She didn't get pop culture references from before 1990. "It means that right now, it's 2008. It's actually 2005 where I'm from, but, uh, guess you've got me beat there."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Deadheads," Cal nodded. "Hippie slacker beatnick potheads with nothing better to do than follow around the Grateful Dead. Not that I was one," he added quickly. "I just needed a place to stay, and they liked me. And...2008? Seriously?"

Cal clearly wasn't buying it. "Where's all the flying cars, or whatever? The proposed nuclear winter?"

[personal profile] absolutesnark 2008-05-09 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, that's just in the movies and that cartoon about the family with the robot maid," Summer replied. "At least there aren't flying cars on this planet in this time."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal snapped his fingers a little.

"Would figure I miss the flying cars," he deadpanned.

Because it wasn't like he actually really believed Summer or anything.
absolutesnark: (Devious)

"You mock now," Summer said, smirking a bit. "But you'll be glad we had this conversation soon enough."

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Who said I was mocking?"

You know, except for the fact that he totally was.
absolutesnark: (Adorable)

"You totally were," Summer said. "Can't mock a mocker."

Cal tilted his head at Summer a bit.

And smirked.

"You know, you're not helping your case very much by becoming a self-admitted mocker."

"You make a very good point," Summer added. "And you know, I think you'll probably be okay here."

"I'm glad you think so," Cal answered after a moment, laughing a little nervously as he wondered what might have been the case that would make Summer think otherwise.
absolutesnark: (Grin)

[personal profile] absolutesnark 2008-05-09 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm really not crazy," Summer had to add. "So if you have any questions or want to know anything about where to go around here for fun, I can so help with that."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal was definitely going to file the not crazy part into his to be determined file, but she was cute, and so crazy probably went with the whole package.

"That second one sounds like a good way to go," he said. "What is there to do around here?"
absolutesnark: (Smile)

"There's Caritas, which is a karaoke bar," Summer explained. "And the Perk has caffeinated goodness. There's a pizza place, a movie theatre, and a few beaches. Those are probably nice right now since we're kinda in Greece."

"And there's always something going on in the common rooms," she added.

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2008)

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-05-09 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The bit about Greece had Cal wondering if he should really ask for advice from someone who was possibly stoned, crazy, or merely picking up on the cues from his Greek features and last name to tease him a little, so he just skipped over that for great Jossing avoiding goodness.

"That doesn't sound too bad. I was a little worried, 'cause it seems like a small island and everything."

Not that Cal was really much of a social creature, but he liked to know that he had options.

"Well, it's never boring around here," Summer said.

"Never?" Cal may have pouted slightly at that. Sometimes, boring was good. He needed a little bit of boring after the past two years...
