fandomhigh | Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2008, Saturday Afternoon (Part I)

The sun was shining over the front lawn of the school (except for the part of the bleachers covered by an awning, in case anyone with sun issues had shown up), and the temperature had thankfully turned out to be perfect for the occasion. There was a stage placed prominently on the lawn, set up with a podium and a number of heavy metal chairs for the administration and guests. In front of the stage were platforms with more of the metal chairs; they'd been painted blue and gold, and were sitting empty and waiting for the arrival of the class of 2008. There were bleachers on each side of the platforms, for students, family, friends, alumni, and residents of the town who wanted to come and watch.

Alas, it was time for another class to graduate.

She made a face and just looked at him.

"What?" He just grinned. "It's true!"

"Except we did leave," she said, completely confused.

"It's a figure of speech," John said, shaking his head at her. "This is the home away from home."

Aeryn shrugged. "I sort of always thought that was Cambridge, honestly."

"You're making a mockery out of my figures of speech," he said and made a face at her.

"I'm not, but that would help me understand it better, wouldn't it?"

"Look, a tree!" John said, trying to distract her with silliness.

"It's as if you think I'm not used to you by now," she said, shaking her head.

"You say the nicest things," he said and leaned over to kiss her cheek. "Still feel the same to you?"

"Which part?" she wondered.

"Just the feeling," he said, shrugging. "Does it feel like it used to?"

"Not really," she admitted. "A lot's changed already."

"Like what?" he asked.

Again she gave him a look.

"I think it's still the same," John said, looking around. "Sure, different faces but I don't ever think the feel of this place will change."

"I only know half the graduates," Aeryn pointed out. "And we're not exactly the same we were last cycle."

"Exactly, the faces are different but this place hasn't changed," he said. "It's still the same weird awesome place we left."

"Still feels different to me," she shrugged. That happened, though, and she knew that.

"Want me to build a fort?" John offered. "Make you feel more at home?"

"You're going to build a fort in the hotel room?" And then she considered that. "Wait, why should that surprise me?"

"No, build a fort right here," he told her. "Right in the middle of graduation."

"I think that can wait," she said quickly, worried he would do it.

"A fort during graduation would just cement my legacy!" John exclaimed.

"And if you'd done it during our graduation, it would have been much more fitting." She was so relieved he hadn't done it then.
