Library [05/01]

Okay, so it was break and he didn't *really* need to be here opening the library, but this was kind of his last chance to do so, what with graduation this weekend and all, so he's here.

Bridge is at the counter, flipping through the latest issue of Extreme Upgrade.

"Here through force of habit?" Jen inquires lightly.

"Well, the other library aides kept working this week anyway, and I didn't want to pass up my last chance to be here- at least in an official capacity- so, here I am."

"One of the reasons I know Fandom's not like normal places," Jen quips, "is that people actually want to go to the library even when they don't have to."

"*You're* here," Bridge points out, one eyebrow raised.

"Because you are," Jen replies, "which means I wouldn't be here if you weren't, and you wouldn't be if you didn't want to be today, so there."

"...Oh. Well. You have a point, there." Bridge admits sheepishly. "Am I that predictable?"

"Not predictable," Jen says. "Think of it more like reliable."

"It does sound somewhat better," Bridge admits with a grin.

"So are you going to help me finish working on my ship before you go?" asks Jen. "Not that I'm rushing you off the island or anything. I'm not really a fan of goodbyes."

"Of course!" Bridge says. "It'll be much easier now that I've got hands, unlike that time I was a sparkly ball of light."

"But you were shiny," Jen says. "Which doesn't get wires reconnected, I guess."

"Not unless I somehow also had telekinesis, which I didn't, so it's rather a moot point."

"And," Jen adds, shaking a finger at him playfully, "moot points won't get my ship off the beach."

"No, that's going to take hard work, replacing some of that burned out wiring, and possibly a new circuit board or two," Bridge replies.

Jen groans a little. "How much am I going to owe you for all that?"

"...Owe me?"

". . . oh, don't you even say I don't."

"But you don't!" Bridge flails.

"Why not?" demands Jen. "I can't just ask you for this stuff for nothing!"

"Dude. Do you know how many chances I've had to work on a 30th-century Time Ship before this year?" Bridge asks.

"Seventy-three," Jen says, deadpan.

Bridge just kind of stares at her for a few moments before bursting in to giggles.

"You! That was a joke."

"Yes. Yes it was." Jen draws herself up to her full (not very impressive) height and gives him her sternest look. "Tell no one."

"My lips are sealed," Bridge says with a smirk.

"Good," Jen says, and salutes him.

Library's closed unless you work here!

Bridge just kind of stares at the cupcake he'd packed for lunch, finding himself missing a certain little girl who'd had a fondness for them. Yes, still.

Something in one of the magazines he'd been reading sparked an idea, and so Bridge is still at the counter, but surrounded by looseleaf filled with notes and diagrams of a potential project.

And just like last week, closing the library is done a few minutes late and somewhat reluctantly.

"I thought last week was your last day," Z said as she entered the library. "What's up?"

"Felt like it?" Bridge says with a sheepish grin.

"You're such a nerd, Carson," Z teased.

"I feel compelled to point out that both you and Jen came by anyway, despite the fact that you didn't know for sure whether I'd be opening today." Though really, there was perhaps only a 1% chance that he wouldn't have.

"Oh, I'm actually back in the dorm reading one of those Barry Plodder books," Z assured him.

"So one of you's reading and the other comes to the library," Bridge points out. "Not seeing a lack of nerdery."

"Hush," Z told him. "One of us has to be the cool one here."

"I don't think you really have anything to worry about, Ms. Cheerleading Prom Queen," Bridge teases.

"Yeah, how the heck did that happen, again?" Z wondered. Then she giggled. "Syd's gonna freak."

Bridge laughs. "She really, really is. Maybe you should take up fencing this summer, and really freak her out."

"Or singing. I could sing." She waited a moment, then confessed, "Not...well, or anything."

*CLINGS DESPERATELY TO LIBRARY*
