Lee decided to ignore all the shelving and sorting to sit and read. He hadn't really done that in awhile and he thought it might be a good way to clear his head and relax.

Relaxing was productive, dammit.

"True," Adah admitted, wrinkling her nose at the Eel for a moment, not sure whether to feel impressed with his stubbornness or get annoyed for stealing so much of her schtick. "But, all the same, if you don't tell me, I'll seek my revenge."

"What if I told you I was thinking of absolutely nothing?" Lee asked.

"Then I'd be extremely disappointed," Adah said, "because earlier you said you might be thinking about me. Also, I probably wouldn't believe you for a second."

She paused.

"Actually, no. That is more believable, that nothing would be working through that thick skull of yours, so nevermind."

"What if I said I still wasn't telling you what I was thinking about just to drive you insane?" Lee asked.

And, wouldn't it figure, she was right back to the same look she'd given him at the start of all this.

"I know you're not telling me what you were thinking about just to drive me insane, Eel."

"I wasn't thinking about anything important," he admitted with a grin. "Just food, mostly. I was just teasing you."

"Where's that book about flowers?" Adah asked, wrinkling her nose again. "Let me see it, so I can have something to throw at you."

Adah let out a long, slow sigh, with a rueful shake of her head to match. "Fine; if that's how you're going to me, maybe I should just get going to work. The walk will be even harder than usual now, what with the heaviness of my broken heart over here."

"Your heart's going to be broken because you can't throw a book on flowers at me?" he asked, laughing at how silly that sounded.

Adah's head bobbed down and jerked back up in a nod.

"And," she added, "because you never think about interesting things."

"Do too," he said defensively. "I just don't tell everyone what I've been thinking. I keep it to myself."

"But why?" Adah asked with a small, innocently heartbroken sort of frown. "You know I'd be interested, right?"

"I know but some things are secrets," he said and shrugged. "Or just random mundane things."

"Who says I wouldn't be interested in the random mundane things?" Adah asked, with a brief moment of a light, almost shy smile, which, of course, she abolished swiftly by adding, "Of course, I'd be more interested in the secrets, but...You know you only make it worse if you keep mentioning secrets, right?"
