Detention [5.04.08] - Saturday 800 to 1300 (the Danger Shop)

Harriet was looking suspiciously bright-eyed this morning as the detention-goers arrived. "Good morning. Today you're going to experience a little taste of Britain's ancient past. Possibly her imaginary past, but never mind. Today, each one of you is going to be Arthur, King of the Britons, and venture forth on a sacred quest for the Holy Grail."

She smiled at each of them in turn, looking far too amused. "It might not go quite as you expect it to," she added, then shooed them off. "Just go through that door to change into appropriate costume. Oh, and those of you with powers of any kind are not to use them. You are to approach this exercise as if you were an ordinary, non-magical, non-mutant, non-gifted human being. Arthur began his quest with only the blessing of God and strength of arms. You are to do the same."

Off went his leg, and he was hopping. "Right. I'll do you for that! Come here. I'm invincible!" He tried to headbutt him. "The Black Knight always triumphs! Have at you! Come on, then."

The man wasn't real, this wasn't real murder, he knew that, or at least hoped it was true ... but bile was still rising in Romeo's throat regardless.

He didn't want to think about it; supposing he must do what he must, he brought the sword toward the man's neck, hoping that at least would get him to fall still.

And God forgive him.

Parry, thrust, twist, and then the knight's other leg came off. He thumped down onto the ground. "Oh? All right, we'll call it a draw," he suggested, unable to move.

"A draw," Romeo agreed, breathing hard as he put the sword away and stepped onto the path past the stump of a man. Turning, he added, "You're sure you need no help? A wheelchair, perhaps?"

The Black Knight ignored the questions. "Oh. Oh, I see. Running away, eh? You yellow bastard! Come back here and take what's coming to you. I'll bite your legs off!"

Hating himself more than a little, Romeo turned just enough to reply, steely, "And if you try, I should kick you clear across the forest."

Then he continued trotting along the path he hoped would get him out of detention.
