How to Survive Your Own Cooking, Tuesday [Apr 1]

Today, Liir was at the front of the class and Miss Lulu sat at the back, looking encouragingly at him from her seat. He wasn't nervous, or didn't appear so anyway, but he did seem to be a bit stiff as he looked at the incoming students.

"Today," he said, "we're doing a variety of cream-based soups. These are always a good option if you have some dairy products that need to be used up, and they're especially good at keeping one warm. I've always liked them better than strictly stock-based recipes for that at least. My Nanny used to say it stuck to the bones better, but that's neither here nor there. Either way, for today, pick a partner and dive in. Though, er, not literally as that would be a stock.

"Also unsanitary."

"At each station is a variety of ingredients, as well as recipes for a number of different cream soups. Feel free to pick one of the provided or if you should know a recipe of your own, use that one instead. There should, however, be some manner of cream or, if you're vegan or can't stomach dairy, some manner of puree involved in the recipe. I'll be coming by to check on things so do bother me if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help."

Liir tried his best to be succinct but complete and his eyes flicked every so often to Miss Lulu at the back.

It's not too hard. Really!

Chad glanced for a partner ~~despite being prone to possible disappearing~~.

Makoto smiled at Chad. "Soup seems easy enough," 'she' said. "Want to work together?"

"Say something like that," Chad said, with a hint of a grin, "and we'll mess it up. Sounds good, though. Any one you wanna try?"

"Well, it is a cooking class. Accidents are almost expected to happen." 'She' looked over the receipes. "How about the Danish Potato (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Danish-Potato-Soup/Detail.aspx) one? That looks good."

Chad shrugged, though he followed it with a nod and an agreeing grunt. "Sure, works for me. Mind cutting up the potatoes, and I'll help once the water's started?"

"Sure," Makoto smiled and reached for the potatoes. "How was your weekend?" 'She' asked lightly. "Fun and kid-filled?"

Chad nodded. "Yup. I stayed this age; I did last year, too. It was fun. Teddy tried to teach me how to play Pocket Monster cards."

That got a laugh. "I'm so glad I stayed this age!" So very, very glad. "Last year? Does this happen on any sort of schedule then?"

"I dunno if I'd call it a schedule," Chad admitted, "but there are certain consistencies. But not enough that everything gets predictable. And I like that the little kids thing happened again. Not sure I'd like some of the other ones happenin' again."

"Oh?" Makoto looked curious. "Now I've got to ask. What other events would you rather not have happen? That aren't, like... the statues. Because that's a given."

Chad paused, as if unsure he really wanted to answer. He cleared his throat a little.

"Waking up as a girl."

Being a girl, once he realized he could use the powers he picked up from Teddy to shapeshift, hadn't been so bad. The waking up as one, however...

...maybe if Chad wasn't naturally such an ugly girl...

...

Makoto spared a moment to wonder how exactly 'she'd' deal with that one. Just pretend Fandom weirdness hadn't struck for whatever reason? Fake being a boy?

...

That'd be... different.

"Oh..." Makoto said, biting back a laugh. "Does it happen in reverse as well?"

"Uhh, actually, no," Chad realized, frowning a little. "That one only seemed to strike the guys; I don't remember any of the girls ever turning into guys."

There was a definite sigh of relief. Makoto figured, however weird it'd be to really be a girl for a day or however long, that that would be doable.

"I wonder why?" she laughed.

Chad shrugged. "Who knows why anything happens 'round here?"

"Because the island's deranged."

What? It was true.

"There you go, then," Chad said.

"Still doesn't mean I don't like it, though," he added a moment later.

"Well no," Makoto admitted, "but I think that anyone it seems who makes it past the first few weeks likes it here partly for the weirdness."

"Kinda like an initiation process."

"It tests your weirdness tolerance." Makoto nodded. "And the ones that stay can deal with it."

"I think I lucked out by gettin' a tolerance for weirdness even before this place."

"Lucky you," Makoto said. "I started from scratch. How weird was your weird?"

"Ummm..."

Chad took a moment to consider how best to answer that.

"Big soul eating monsters attacking my town and then having to go to a version of the afterlife based loosely on feudal Japan to save a friend who's a Death God, or would be a Death God if she hadn't given her powers to my best friend weird. Oh. And that I have this spirit armour arm thingy that I can do sometimes weird, too. And another friend of mine has barettes that turn into fairies weird. That kind of weird."

"Yeah," Makoto said. "I guess that'd prepare you for Fandom really well."

Chad grinned slightly. "Yeah. Just a bit."

And, to think, he even forgot to mention the parakeet he'd had with the soul of a boy in it and the phenomenon that was Kon...

Hmm soup. That was a pretty basic camp food that Haku knew very well.

He's totally right there for all your needs, though if his eyes go out the window looking for falling dessert, well... it's no wonder.

He's rather mournful about all the wasted food.

When SHE pings in.

Lulu was there, ready in case anyone needed some extra assistance with their recipes. After class, she was still there, finishing up some paperwork.

Heeee yay for great, um, last minute warning! I have no idea what's in most of those recipes but they all had good reviews. And now I'm hungry.
