Ethics [Thursday, March 27]

Anakin was leaning against the edge of his desk looking a little smug. "You've had a week with your droid babies. I trust you've all slept well?"

He thought he was funny. He was so, so wrong.

"Today I want you to tell us about what you learned this week by being responsible for something a bit more complicated than an egg. " He smiled. "Would this serve as an effective check on raging hormones? Actions always have consequences, be they as major as a baby or as minor as rolling over in the morning and wondering what on Earth you were thinking the night before."

Karal was exhausted, but it had very little to do with Edgar. He propped his head on his hand and watched the front of the class vaguely.

Amber listened. She wasn't even tired either.

Romeo listened quietly. He had handed the droid baby off to Mel days ago, so he wasn't especially tired.

As hard as it had been being woken up every night, Lana was really going to miss the twins.

Anemone wasn't sleepy in the slightest. She just rolled her eyes, and went back to coloring in her notebook.

Summer was slightly tired as she listened to the lecture.

Hoshi was glad she was able to split with week with summer. She was well-rested and felt sorry for all her drowsy classmates.

Harry wasn't any more tired than he normally was. So he listened just as well as he normally did.

"When someone tries to foist your child off on you, you should insist they continue to have sole custody," Jenny said. "Also, you can too change their names, it's not like they notice." Todd didn't even seem to realize he was Albert now. Or maybe that was why he cried so much. One or the other.

Rikku considered. "Okay. I learned that standing up for yourself is a good thing, and that foisting the kid off on a semi-deadbeat co-parent can totally work, which rocks. I learned that cheerleaders are awesome and will totally cover you with blankets while you nap. I learned that I so, so, so am not ready to be a parent yet, even though he was kinda cute when he was sleeping. And I learned that baby-sitters are seriously underappreciated and underpaid. Also underappreciated: full nights of sleep. Because those rule."

"Feeling guilty for abandoning your responsibilities and dropping them on someone else is not pleasant at all," no matter how good the reason might be. "And droid babies are surprisingly strong and have a fascination for hair, or at least Edgar did. But she didn't eat everything like Trenor used to, and that was good. She was nice. I do not want one yet, but someday, definitely. Possibly several." He was babbling, he realised, but couldn't quite stop himself. "I'm not sure how effective a droid baby would be at encouraging someone to caution."

"I learned that all you gotta do is end up with a partner who likes toy babies," Reno smirked, "if you wanna sleep at night instead of doin' weird homework assignments involvin' robot kids."

"Once you have the kidlet's attention on something, they can pay attention to it for a long time. There is a meaning for every cry they make. Birth control is a very good thing. No, I don't think little robot babies will prevent people from having sex. While I like the thought of having kids someday, now is definitely not that day."

"I learned I'm nowhere near ready to be a father," Romeo readily admitted. "I wasn't prepared for how ceaseless the droid's demands would be."

"I also learned that I was not wrong, and nannies are a very, very good thing for parents to have."

"Birth control is definitely a good thing," Lana said. "But I also learned that sometimes the most unexpected people will show up and offer to help. I definitely want kids some day, but not while I'm still going to school preferably."

Andrew looked pouty. He would most likely never have a child of his own, and after this week, that kind of bothered him.

"Kids would be awesome."
