"Patent Law," Nathan said as he passed around that week's handouts, "may sound boring. However it can be a lucrative field for anyone willing to brave a career more prone to paperwork and government red tape than most branches of law. If you're looking for something noble, consider how many inventors get scammed by companies pretending to have their best interests at heart. If you want something controvertial, how about the idea of putting a patent on life?

"For today's class we're going to start with the basics," Nathan said as he went back to his desk. "Pair up, study who can apply for a patent and try to work together to figure out an invention that can meet the listed criteria. I'm not looking for your ability to invent things - there's a whole other class for that - I'm primarily looking for your ability to understand the requirements. Then, if you want extra credit, figure out whether both of you get to have an equal claim to the invention.

"I'm here if you have questions."

Jack was trying not to gawk, really.

Lana glanced over at him. "Why are you staring at me?"

"I'm, uh, staring at the kids, there," he gestured.

"Droid babies," Lana said with a rueful smile. "For Ethics class. They're quite a handful."

"That sounds like a whole mess right there," he said, with a sad smile. "You holding up well?"

"Tired, but okay," Lana said with a smile. "I've had some unexpected help."

"Someone in class?" he asked, grinning a bit. "Don't think I could handle kids. Even if they're just for class."

"Yes, actually," she said with a smile. "And the kids are a handful, but someday... I'd really love some of my own."

"You want a family?" he asked. "Lots of kids?" Kids were kind of fun. In small doses.

"Someday," Lana said a little wistfully. "And I don't know about lots, but one or two, yeah."

Jack grinned. "Picket fence around the house as well?" he asked. Picket fences were a sign you've Made It.

Lana shrugged shyly, not sure if she was being made fun of. "It doesn't really matter about the house," she said. "I'd just love a home and family of my own someday."

Jack's grin became more of a smile. "Me too, someday. Not likely to happen, being a trucker, but...maybe someday," he said, softly.

"You never know," Lana said. "I don't know how much hope there is for me either, but it is my dream."

The grin was back, a bit. "Mine's to own my own business. Trucker. Set my own hours, take whatever loads I want all over." He sighed, smile slipping. "Not that good on a family, though. Not home much."

Lana nodded. "Still, I'm sure there's a way if you want it badly enough. I hope you get your dream."

"I do, too," he said. "And a family." Grin was back.

He looked over at the robokids. Maybe even kids, someday. Big wedding, few rugrats running around.

"Good luck with it," she said sincerely.

"You too," he said, doffing an invisible hat at her. "I hope it works out well for you. And... for them, too," he said, gesturing at the kids.

"Thanks," Lana said quietly. "I appreciate it."
