Lawyering Up: Class 11, Wed, 2nd period (3/26)

"Patent Law," Nathan said as he passed around that week's handouts, "may sound boring. However it can be a lucrative field for anyone willing to brave a career more prone to paperwork and government red tape than most branches of law. If you're looking for something noble, consider how many inventors get scammed by companies pretending to have their best interests at heart. If you want something controvertial, how about the idea of putting a patent on life?

"For today's class we're going to start with the basics," Nathan said as he went back to his desk. "Pair up, study who can apply for a patent and try to work together to figure out an invention that can meet the listed criteria. I'm not looking for your ability to invent things - there's a whole other class for that - I'm primarily looking for your ability to understand the requirements. Then, if you want extra credit, figure out whether both of you get to have an equal claim to the invention.

"I'm here if you have questions."

Lana Lang. With the mostly sleeping twins, Maggie and Lara.

Lana was a little distracted with keeping the kids quiet. And other things. Like the guy helping her with the kids.

And there was that guy, reaching to take one of the twins and give Lana a break from double duty during class. "And how are the nonverbal nonhuman babies doing today?" he whispered.

"No meltdowns yet," she said, smiling up at him. "I'm afraid they're storing up for one big one before I get to give them back tomorrow. They'll probably have me up all night too!"

Meg took notes as per usual but this definitely wasn't the type of law she wanted to study in college.

Summer had Reizo with her since pretty much everyone she'd ask to babysit are in this class anyway.

Oooh. Patent law! Turtle was actually bouncy about that one, all thanks to Mr. Hoo and his paper shoe soles. She took very good notes, as usual.

Annette listened and studiously took notes.

Jack was alternating between taking notes and gawking at the fake kids.

Lana wasn't sure she had anywhere near enough brain left to even think about something to patent.

Jack was trying not to gawk, really.

Chris looked for a partner and wondered if it would count if he tried to patent something magical.

Sam was there with his usual notes. He wasn't sure if this was the kind of law for him, but that didn't mean he wasn't thinking about it.

I actually have a patent in my name. I'd love to say I developed something unique and all. But really it was a case of being in the right place at the right time. The guy whose name should have been on the patent quit just before the paperwork was being filed. Since they needed a name, and I inherited the project. My name was put on it.

I'll never make a dime off of it but I did get a nifty plaque.

My brother does medical and scientific patent law.

His first job paid him $130K a year.

I hate him.
