Library; Wednesday [ 03/26 ]

Adah knew full well that today, she may have to be dealing with the aftermath of whatever had occurred as a result of her missing rabbit disappearing somewhere in the library. What she didn't know, however, was how, although, as she limped in and got herself settled for shift, she hoped that, whatever it was, it didn't distract her from her reading too much.

Perhaps it was just the uncertainty of the bunny situation that had Adah leaning on good old standards of procedures, like stacking books according to where she'd put them. Or maybe she just didn't have anything else to do and, at the root of things, this was a terribly boring job.

The books were stacked and ready to be shelved, but Adah decided that she really didn't want to get up today. So, there they stayed, and Adah just quietly did some reading instead limping around with the cart as usual.

Adah was just about nearly finished with reading the book backwards; she had to admit, she was pretty intrigued to see how it would read the proper way once she finished it the Adah way.

There's at least half of Adah's sandwich that she knew was probably going to go uneaten, perhaps offered to the Librarian or other aides, since they're the only ones the place is open to during this time apparently.

More reading? Who'd have figured. It was kind of incredible how quickly one could breeze through a book when they had little else occupying their time.

Adah stopped reading occasional this time to jot something down in a notebook. She'd started reading The Blind Assassin forwards now, and was trying to map out all the details of the world that the male character was telling the female one about. There were a lot of really good ideas in that; she was especially fond about the whole bit of cutting out the tongues of the virginal sacrifices so that they didn't scream too much in an undignified manner.

I'm off to work, but it's a short shift, so I'll be back around 1 pm EST!

A tired Karal with a very awake and lively Edgar came into the library just before it closed. Her fingers were wrapped around a hunk of his hair - still attached, this time - but he just twisted his head so it wouldn't pull quite so much. "Good afternoon, Adah. As promised, one small and grabby-handed fake child."

Romeo's stride hesitated momentarily when he noticed who was working, but he plunged onward toward the desk.

Adah hadn't laughed at him too much, lately, and his quest would be worth it even if she had.

"Good morrow," he said, leaning against the counter. "Have you language books, the kind that come with CDs so a poor student doesn't make a hash of the pronunciation?"

Lee meandered in sometime after his last class and kept on meandering until he was leaning on the desk, bag at his feet.

"Hey," he greeted.

Adah loved when that moment of hesitation happened; she knew to watch for it when someone came in, so she almost always caught it, and she smirked a little as Romeo approached. She listened for the request and give a nod her head before it tilted slightly to the side, her eyes questioning, as to wondering which language he was interested in picking up.

"Which tongue? Japanese," Romeo said, ignoring the smirk he had expected. "I should like to be able to say more than 'hello' and 'cool.' It seems only fair to Dojima."

Adah greeted Karal back with a nod of her head, offering Edgar a small smile at her clear, thorough work of wearing him down and thinking that, perhaps, if she'd done so well, then, soon, she'd be too tired to be too difficult for her. She lifted her chin, making a clear attempt to inspect what parts of Karal's hair wasn't currently being held to jokingly (or perhaps a little sincerely) check how much was still there.

Adah smirked a little at her pages, but it twisted with an exaggerated expression of disappointment that accompanied her reluctant shift of her bookmark to pages only read backwards so far to the page she was currently on. The lovers were hidden in a broken down gaslight era home, and he was just getting around to the titular blind assassin of the book, about to murder the sacrifice and pretend to take her place. He was just lucky that he managed to scrape by as a worthy distraction, though just barely.

She closed the book around the marker and kept her attention on it until she'd set it aside at a perfect angle, and then glanced toward the Eel. "Hey."

Adah took a moment to give a slightly scorned look toward the computer; she knew she could just enter it in and get an exact answer, but, really, it was unnecessary. She'd been to that section of the library enough that she could probably lead Romeo there blindfolded.

Of course, though, she couldn't make it that easy. She told Romeo exactly where he could find what he was looking for, with directions, even, on how to navigate the shelves to find it.

But she told him in neat, precise Japanese.

Which would be why Romeo was just standing there, staring at Adah, assuming some part of what she had said was an answer, though one he could not decode.

Recovering slightly, he decided to Verona in her direction. She'd understand him, but if nothing else he'd amuse himself with it. In a teasing tone, he returned, "Thou art a minx, a minx most wretched, to hear my plea and comprehend it but give thine thoughts voice only in a way such that I must linger here still, and ask again. Doest thou always abuse power so, or doest thou merely believe thyself in greater need of company than I am of my books? I've no classes today, the clock is as much my friend as thine."

"Did I interrupt something?" Lee asked, amused.

Adah didn't think she'd ever gotten minx before; she felt rather nicely accomplished, and her face showed it, listening to Romeo jaw on, giving a pause at the end of empty space, in case he wasn't finished or perhaps just for dramatics.

"Definitely the former of those two," she assured him with a smirk, and, after a light roll of her eyes, repeated the directions for him again, this time in English.

"You did," Adah said, nodding her head and giving a lingering glance back towards the book. "It's an exceptionally entertaining read..." She hesitated a bit before she added, "It reminds me of us a little, actually."

"It does?" He crossed his arms and leaned against the desk. "How so?"

If Adah was smug, Romeo was equally so at having gotten clear directions out of her, so he smirked right back. "I thank thee," he said, just to show he wasn't entirely done, and wandered off into the stacks.

Some 20 minutes later -- he'd gotten distracted in the poetry section -- he returned with a book of extremely elementary Japanese for checkout. Without further comment, he passed it and his card over the counter to Adah.

Adah gave a small nod. "It does. Two lovers," she held up two fingers with the explanation, "and their secret, scandalous entanglements, each of which occurs also with the occasion of the gentleman telling the lady a story of a distant world. Three suns and different creatures and elaborate histories and everything. The reminder comes more from the storytelling than their love affair; I think we're a little lacking in the scandal, and, really, his personality is more mine, than yours, but it's impossible for me to read it and not think of you when you read out loud or tell me things about Caprica." She smiled a little after the explanation, a smile that could almost be considered shy. It was only lightly so, but probably noticeable, based merely on the fact that it was so rare for her.

"You like when I read to you? And tell you about my home?" he asked, expression softening when he noticed her smile. He made a point to remember that one so he could think about it when things weren't going as well as they were now. "I can do that anytime you'd like."

Adah quietly and placidly checked the book out for Romeo, taking a moment to pretend to be overly critical and observing of his choice, all show because she actually thought it was going to turn out to be a good place to start. As she slid it back toward him, forward on the desk, she added, "I can bring my notebook from my Japanese lessons with me to club this week, if you're interested."

She figured that, if Romeo had the patience to penetrate through some of the distractions that Adah naturally took to fill up the margins, it might be useful, and she wasn't using it any longer.

"Hey, I never said I liked it," Adah pointed out, with a very serious face, really. As serious as she could manage, which was mostly successful. "I just said that the story he tells reminds me of you reading and your stories of your home."
