My Country - Third Period - Friday 3/21

When everyone came into class they would have immediately noticed a special guest there. “Good morning everyone. Since you’re going to be running your countries from this point on I thought I would share with some different perspectives on how people run a country by inviting Cable here to speak with you all and tell you about his country, and I’ll tell you about mine.”

He nodded to Cable to let him take the floor.

Cable was--

Well, he wasn't lurking, that was for sure. He was a very obvious presence in the class, standing tall, and maybe a little awkwardly if it wasn't not bothering him as obviously as it was. He flashed the class a smile-- a broad and disarming one.

Ah, public relations.

"Good morning," he began, "My name is Nathan Dayspring Summers. Most people will know me as Cable. I'm here today to talk to you about the realities of nation building-- and the importance of progress and philosophy while you're doing it." He crossed his arms. "I spent several years building an island thinktank called Providence in order to help brainstorm solutions for the future. I also spent several years rebuilding the nation of Rumekistan from the ground up.

"There have been a great many political 'faiths' in our time. Socialism, communism, liberalism... every generation has found some conviction they felt could heal the world. But our future is not built on extremes, and neither are our people. The truth, you'll find, it usually in the middle: practical concerns are more important than adhering to any -isms that might seem of importance at the time. Most people, you'll find, want simply to live good lives. They aren't interested in extremes. They're interested in working power, in food for their children, a safe place to sleep. They want peace.

"I built Providence to help pave the way to invent solutions. To help build a world worth living in. I rebuilt Rumekistan to show the world that these solutions work. That it's possible for there to be peace-- for fair elections," and he ignored Irene's voice helpfully pointing out his own role as a benevolent dictator in his head, "--and that anything can be made strong again. Building a country means caring for your people. Caring for their futures. Remember, though, that that isn't the work of days, weeks, months, or even years. It's decades and centuries that win out in the end; all we can do is to build the infrastructure and foster the environment for the people to grow, rather than to falter; to build, rather than to destroy; and to live, above all, rather than to kill, maim, or conquer."

Yondaime nodded to Cable with a polite smile. “Thank you Nate, that’s very informative,” he turned back to the class, mostly hiding a slight ‘OMG’ look on his face. Cable just had that effect on him. “The country I was in charge of was a bit different than Nate’s. It is called Konoha has been established for several generations. Our country started as the military for the Country of Fire, serving as the Daimyo’s army before we became more independent. Still, we started out as a military country and we have remained that way. The leader of the country is the Kage, for mine it is the Hokage since we’re in the fire country. There is a check system between the Hokage and a council of elders when it comes to passing laws or making major decisions regarding most everything that could be of a large impact for the people. Though we’re still militarily focused it’s not from an aggressive stance. We protect those who need to be protected though granted some of our elite agents were hired by various factions to run espionage, the Hokage and the council of Elders review each request that is brought to the village to make sure it will not put any of the regular citizens in danger. While we strive ultimately for peace, we know that it’s something that’s fought hard for not just discussed."

Arashi took a deep breath and looked a little far off and sad for a moment before addressing the class again with a smile. "Do you guys have any questions for us? On what it’s like to run a country?"

[Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] spring_lost for the co-write on class.]

...That's a long lecture. Jack may have started spacing out a bit, trying to stay awake.

It'd been a while since he'd done public relations.

It still wasn't exactly one of his favourite things; but Cable definitely didn't look the sentiment.

He kept his weight off one of his ankles in a way that was pretty much unnoticable to the untrained eye.
