Speaking in Tongues [7.03]

Karal smiled at everyone, hoping no one noticed the bunny prints on the library floor.

"I'm not sure if this will work, but I made lots of little paper squares," Karal put a box on the table, and some large squares of cardboard, with grids marked on them, "with the letters of the languages we've been learning. I thought we could get into pairs, or groups, and play a multi-language version of the game of scrabble."

Have at it! Sorry this is late, I was distracted by coffee woes.]

Seeing the Librarian's attention was focused on a book, Adah couldn't complain too much that just glancing over was unlikely to catch his attention. One couldn't exactly be sore about being less interesting than a book. She could, however, make an attempt to subtly crane her neck over and try to peek at cover or spine to see what exactly it was he was reading.

'Attempt' was the operative word here; most people could manage subtle. Most people didn't, however, have half a paralyzed nervous system, and so Adah's craning left her having to pull back with a sharp pull in her neck that was none too pleasant, that got stuck there and made her hiss a bit at the pain as her good hand tried to ease it out so she could move again.

"Miss Price." It was always interesting, at least, when she was being herself. "Can I help you?" He asked, closing the book.

Nose wrinkling and mouth twisting into a slight grimace, Adah contritely settled back where she was sitting for a moment as she continued to work out the pinched nerve, the sparked nerve, the inflamed nerve...whatever it was, and, as she worked it gingerly with her fingers, she thought that, at the very least, she could work the sneer into a bit of a pitiful simpering for attention. Of which she would have to soundly admonish herself for pulling later, but it had been a while, and he didn't even step out to see her Wednesday, so she had to make up for lost time.

Once she felt the tension leaving her right side (it had drifted, painfully, as it tended to do, toward her shoulder, down to her elbow until it twinged at the very tips of her fingers so much she almost wanted to whimper in pain, but that was pushing it way too much, even if the reaction would have been natural and visceral), she tried again, tucking her lower lip under her teeth as her wide eyes drifted again toward the now closed book, imploring and innocent to read the title with interest.

He moved the book so the cover was visible. Lao-Tzu's Treatise on the Response of the Tao.

It was nice to have time for such things here.

"Are you well?"

The Tao. Like Simon had recommended to her, which Adah remembered being less than impressed with. Against her best intentions, she found herself actually intrigued for a moment. Fired neurons settling, her body started to take a natural leaning toward the book, as if drawn by some sort of magnetic gravity contained in cat-killing curiosity. She loved books containing opinions. Books containing opinions on opinions (or, perhaps, in that delightfully layered titled, opinions on opinions on opinions, snoinipono, snoinipono, snoinipono...) were even better.

And then she remembered, through the dull call of literature, where she was and what she was doing and her attention shifted again, from the book, to the Librarian, with a smile, sweet as can be, to suggest that, yes, she was fine, thank you. Perhaps she even managed to get the slight inkling of suggestion that she was particularly fine, of course, because she was in his company.

"Would you care to borrow it?" He asked, raising an eyebrow at the smile. Such an odd little girl.

Would she care to borrow a book? The smiled gained a much more Adah-like smirk as she made it quite clear that asking a question like that was entirely pointless, and then her eyes drifted again toward the book, tilting her head carefully, checking the pages for any sign of a marker to indicate whether he was reading it merely out of boredom so it wouldn't be interrupting anything if she did borrow it, or if his progress through it was worthy of being kept by a slip of paper, perhaps laminated, or a bit of string, a spare scrap of a receipt or folded-up Post-It. Classic yellow, she'd imagine.

He kept the eyebrow raised, starting to smirk now. "Anything else, Miss Price?"

Leading with her own smirk, Adah remained curved over, leaning forward, but her eyes shifted from pages to Librarian. She was a little surprised to see the smirk returned, she had to admit, and she blinked slightly, but didn't let her own falter. Instead, she pushed it forward a little more with a careful quirk of her head as if to open the field to suggestion. Borrowing a book, that was pretty...typical allowances between a librarian and his aide; anything more might...suggest things.

The look was Sahara dry.

"For the club, Miss Price."

Adah batted her eyes a few times, as if ever so innocently trying to consider what else he could possibly have meant besides the in regards for the club and, oh-so-clearly, coming up with nothing but a curious tilt of her head.

"Of course," He replied, still as dry as before. "I expect the book back at the next meeting."

Adah gave a slow, careful nod, paying attention to both that she didn't pull her neck again and to keep her eyes lingering more than would normally be deemed comfortable.

And then privately hoped that Bob didn't get to it more than she had a chance to, because she wasn't exactly sure how she'd explain returning the book all nibbled on by a bunny.

He looked back, meeting her gaze easily.

It really would take more than a teenage girl to intimidate him. Well... ones named River were a different case for many reasons.
