His plans to go tuxedo shopping soon must have been on Anakin's mind when he'd planned this week's lesson.


"Love is patient, love is kind," he began, then made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain proper distance, to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be proper Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred, or love."

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"We release them back into the Force," Anakin replied, equally serious. "I meditate at least twice a day."

"Could prayer do the same?" Romeo asked, the question out of his lips before he realized how much of himself he was revealing.

Not that he was having problems with destructive passions at the moment, but it still might be useful knowledge to have in the future.

Anakin nodded. "It's about centering yourself. Taking time, not just reacting instinctively--and destructively."

" 'Violent delights have violent ends,' " Romeo parroted Friar Laurence's words in Professor Skywalker's direction, though he was mostly talking to himself. "I can see where remembering that lesson, if one could, would be of use, from what you have told us of the Jedi."

"We start remembering it early," Anakin said. "I was almost ten when I went to the Temple and I was considered far too old."

"Did you get a choice, or was it forced on you?" Romeo wanted to know. Ten did not strike him as young to begin learning a trade; the only question was how much choice the child got.

Though he suspected most people got little choice indeed.

"It was much better than my only other option at the time," Anakin said.

Romeo swallowed hard, able to imagine what the other possibilities might have been, and nodded. "Thank you, professor."
