Speaking in Tongues [22/02] The Library, Friday afternoon

Karal might have seemed a little distracted, today. Not for any reason at all, really.

"Well, I thought that we could do things simply today. I have an idea or two for the next weeks, but we all need to have a bit of language in common for them to work. The best way to learn a language is to use it. So, for today, let's just talk. We can have conversations, about silly things, or serious things, or anything you want.

Pair up with someone and help them with a language they don't know, teach them some words and phrases, and then try them out." He rubbed his temple, looking a touch amused. "Any accidental offence should be ignored, please. Try not to, but sometimes it simply happens. I once called a Rethwellan dignitary a small, blue turnip, for example."

[ooc: the teaching part can be handwavey, feel free to jump into potentially amusing conversations as people don't quite get the language they've learned right the first time.]

Karal started to laugh. "I wouldn't want them to eat me! That was not as difficult as I thought it would be. What did I say when I said it correctly?"

She said each phrase first in English and then in crow. "Hello. //Hello.// How are you? //How are you?// I am pleased to meet you. //I am pleased to meet you.//"

Karal nodded, taking a moment to memorise them. "And here's those same phrases in Karsite." He repeated them in Karsite, pronouncing each word slowly and carefully, then did it again. "Do you want to try them?"

Lana listened carefully and then repeated them. Her accent was a bit clumsy, but the words were correct. "Oh, I like that!" she said. "Karsite sounds like a beautiful language!"

"I do like it, but I suspect I might be biased," he teased. "Teach me some more crow? How would I say Where is the closest town?"

She pronounced that very carefully for him. "Oh and you might want to add, //I will give you something shiny if you can help me.//" And then grinned as she explained what she'd said. "They do love shiny things."

He beamed at her. "Now that is excellent advice!" He said it in crow, then repeated both phrases in Karsite. "Though the latter won't be as effective with Karsites as with crows."

Lana laughed. "No, I can't imagine it would!" She repeated the phrases carefully, trying to get the intonation just right.
