Speaking in Tongues [22/02] The Library, Friday afternoon

Karal might have seemed a little distracted, today. Not for any reason at all, really.

"Well, I thought that we could do things simply today. I have an idea or two for the next weeks, but we all need to have a bit of language in common for them to work. The best way to learn a language is to use it. So, for today, let's just talk. We can have conversations, about silly things, or serious things, or anything you want.

Pair up with someone and help them with a language they don't know, teach them some words and phrases, and then try them out." He rubbed his temple, looking a touch amused. "Any accidental offence should be ignored, please. Try not to, but sometimes it simply happens. I once called a Rethwellan dignitary a small, blue turnip, for example."

[ooc: the teaching part can be handwavey, feel free to jump into potentially amusing conversations as people don't quite get the language they've learned right the first time.]

"So what are you going to teach me today?" he asked eagerly.

"I can teach you Ktarian if you'd like?" Naomi offered.

"That would be awesome," he replied. "Should we start with some of the basics?"

Naomi nodded, "that will be fine," she said.

She then started with some basics in Ktarian, //Hello, how are you?// she said carefully, making sure that she wasn't speaking too fast.

Andrew repeated it back to her, his accent still very much Andrewish. "And what does that mean?" he asked.

Naomi listened carefully as he repeated it back, she nodded "that was pretty good for a first go," she said, "it meant, Hello, how are you?"

"Oh, I'm fine. Thank you," Andrew said with a nod.

"How do you say, peachy keen?"

There wasn't an exact translation of 'peachy keen' in Ktarian but Naomi gave what the closest translation was.

Andrew repeated this one very carefully back to her. It was one he wouldn't want to mess up.

"Do you get to speak this often?" he asked.

Re: Chat!

"Not a great deal," Naomi said, "I tend to write in Ktarian more than when I get to speak it,"

"I imagine you encounter all kinds of cool languages where you're from," he said.

"What's it like visiting other worlds?"

Re: Chat!

[identity profile] ktarian-wildman.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Naomi nodded, "it's pretty amazing," she said, "especially when you visit a world that's had no prior contact from people where you're from,"

Re: Chat!

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
"How many world have you been to?" he asked, slightly in awe of the thought.

Re: Chat!

[identity profile] ktarian-wildman.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
"I've been to quite a few," Naomi replied, "especially when I was younger - I grew up on a starship that had been stranded in a largely unexplored region of space, so I visited a few different worlds there,"

Re: Chat!

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds kind of lonely," Andrew commented. "How many people are on a starship?"

Re: Chat!

[identity profile] ktarian-wildman.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
"It was sometimes, but it was still home," Naomi said, "It largely depends on the type of starship, some can have close to 1000 people. Voyager only had about 140,"

"How does the plumbing work on a starship?" These are the questions he had always pondered as a daydreaming child. "You know, for showering and, um, stuff."

Naomi went into a fairly detailed handwavey technobabble as she described how the plumbing worked on a starship.
