Journalism Class - Tuesday October 4

Spider is sitting at his desk, talking to what is apparently thin air. The two-faced cat is sitting at the corner of the desk, batting at something invisible. After a few minutes, a reddish-purple cloud forms directly where the cat had been playing and begins speaking in a soft voice, apparently making some sort of report. After saying its piece, it dissipates.

"Good morning class." Spider glances up at his students. "Apparently someone's been playing games with my newsfeeds and the security monitors. That was Jeremy, our service tech for my systems. As you may have noticed, he's a nano-cloud and will only be seen when he wants to. He has repaired the interruption in the feeds and will be carefully monitoring the system from this point onward."

Spider's eyes narrowed as he looked over the top of his glasses at the class. "There will be no more nonsense with my video feeds. Offenders will be sent to do clean-up duty in the basement, do I make myself clear?"

Turning away, he gestured at the feeds, which obediently shifted to show various scenes. "Yesterday we discussed Beauty - or you did. Today we're going to talk about heroism. What makes a hero, what do you believe a hero to be... and yes, we'll discuss a different word or concept each day this week with a final discussion on Friday."

A little self-conscious at being the first in class, Angela nonetheless takes a seat.

"I think being a hero means doing something that is right for the most people, no matter what's easiest or best for yourself," she begins. "It doesn't mean, like, not being afraid, but ... sort of working through your fear." She pauses, considers. "I mean, it takes more than that to be a hero, but that's kind of my working definition."

John enter the room and slides into his seat in enough time to hear the question posed by the professor.

"A hero, in my opinion, is one who practices altrusim in his life." John stops, considering. "However, I think there are many subsections, if you will, of heroes including the unlikely hero and the anti hero. Both are heroes but for very different reasons."

Phoebe takes her usual seat and looks around the room. Her eyes are red-rimmed and her hair is pulled back in a ponytail. There are several bruises along her arms and her jaw.

"Being a hero means you do something for someone wih no thought as to the reward."

Remembering their interrupted phone call, Angela tosses Phoebe a note.

It reads, P. - Is everything okay? - A.

"I agree with Phoebe," Chihaya chimed in. "I think a hero has no thought for himself but for the service and well-being of others."

Chihaya leaned over and whispered, "No luck in finding a way out of that form?" The answer was pretty obivious he supposed but he was curious.

"You would say that wouldn't you?" Veronica says, walking past.

She takes her own seat and says "A hero is someone who isn't afraid to do what needs to be done, even if they know they face negative consequences."

Draco pokes his head into the room.

"Um, I'm sorry to be a bother sir but have you seen a Mime about? We're trying to catch it before he does any real damage."

"A... mime?" Spider's face had a decidedly interesting look on it. "Not in this classroom. Do you have a decent supply of washcloths?"

Beka leans in the doorway, arms crossed over her chest. "I wouldn't know, I'm sure." Then, wryly to hide the deadly serious gleam in her eye, she says, "A hero is someone who puts themselves between others and harm. Usually because they figure they deserve the damage more than anyone, and maybe because they're used to it they can take it better."

"Hero?" D'anna mused for a moment, "Depends on if we're talking local community, city or national sound-bite. Local - we're talking about kid who saved a kitten from that menacing tree it went up. City - we're talking about the guy who saved a toddler from drowning. National - we're talking some kind of soldier who did his or her job under extreme duress."

She thinks, "Personal heroes are something else entirely."

Jack thinks about this for a moment and then starts. "A hero is a guy with no powers at all who takes a dose of radiation big enough to garuntee a slow and excruiating death because it will save others. A medic who goes into a hostile combat zone unarmed because somebody needs medical attention. A hero is somebody who is willing to sacrifice everything, even their life, for somebody they don't even know just because it's the right thing to do."

A hero is someone who is lucky and lives to tell the tale. Assuming of course you mean live heros and not dead ones...

Xander arrives ten minutes late, clearly wearing the clothes he slept/rode the bus in, and carrying a Very Large Coffee.

"A hero is...somebody who's willing to risk their own life to keep other people safe," he says.

I think a hero can be a lot of things in todays society, for example someone who is no one but themselves in a world constantly trying to make them someone else... or someone who puts others needs before there own for no other reason than because it's right... or someone who stands up for something, anything, that matters to them.

Duce sits in on Journalism since there've been no postings for Combat Journalism nor homework for it in awhile. She adds in a voice only those sitting closest to her, and Spider's spy-mics can hear, "Hero is a word that began as a means of bolstering the spirit and erasing the guilt of young people sent to kill and die for a cause. We really don't like that word. Or the causes. It's changed over the years - now it's used for people who save lives, but it's also still used for people who take them."

We have a saying about heroes, which basically says that a hero is the worst thing for a people. It causes people to follow fanatically, and at times, there is nothing worse for stability.
