Sneaky Spycraft: Week 7, Period 4

Once the class was assembled, Aly pushed herself up off her seat on her desk.  "Afternoon to all of you.  Last week, we talked about disguises and their use.  Next week is your spring break which means that all of you can run off to wherever you like, and all of us teachers will enjoy our break.  Which means that this week, we have a lot to talk about."  She grinned.  "Yeah, that didn't follow at all, but let's pretend it did."

"Today, we're going to talk about language.  Any good spy should speak at least a few languages that are used in her area of operations.   And by at least a few, I mean as many as possible," Aly glanced over the class.  "Even if you can't speak the language well enough to pass as a native - and don't overestimate your abilities, not everyone can - you need to speak well enough to recruit natives to spy for you and be able to communicate when you need to."

"I'm pretty sure most of you know more than one language," she said.  "For many of you, English is definitely not the language you were born with.  So.  What I want everyone to do today is to pair up and communicate without using English.  You can use sign, do charades, find another language in common, just no English."  She grinned.  "Why?  Because you all should see what it's like if you don't bother to learn a language and try to spy."

"Until our next class, I want all of you to start learning another language.  I don't care what it is, something that you find useful or interesting," Aly threw an amused glance at Willow if she were there.  "You can consider it homework.  If you don't have an idea where to start?  There's a language club this semester, and I believe one of the heads of it is in our class," she smiled at Inara if she were there.  "It meets Fridays in the library, check it out if you need some direction."

"Any questions?  Then pair up an get to."

The best way to communicate without English? Silence. Zuko was good at that.

Luke could do silence. He gave Zuko a wave.

He never thought he'd miss Threepio. Weird.

He was getting waved at. Which was... something.

There was a moment of well, silence and it may have looked like Zuko was going to ignore the wave when he remembered that he was a TA and he should cooperate even if it was making him feel stupid. He was good at feeling stupid lately.

So yes, Luke did get a wave back.

Luke replied with a huge smile and a double thumbs-up.

Dork.

Zuko didn't think his wave was that good, but if Luke thought so he wasn't going to argue. Mainly cause they weren't allowed to.

He wasn't sure how to respond to a thumbs-up, though, and looked around the room trying to think of something to do and finally settled for offering Luke a piece of chocolate. Bribery so counted as communication.

Bribery was an excellent form of communication! Especially the edible kind. Luke gave him another smile and took the chocolate, then looked around for something of equal value to offer.

This was reminding him of being in the Ewok village without the nasty "almost being dinner" bits.

Ooh! Another chocolate. He held it out for Zuko.

Okay, if not talking English went like this, Zuko could actually live with it. Maybe they should do this on a daily basis.

He accepted the chocolate with a nod and then ate it promptly, because what better way to say thanks.

Wait, he knew. Luke got a thumbs-up back from Zuko. Not that being good had turned him into a dork. Maybe just a little.

Luke let out a silent laugh and mimed clapping his hands together. This was easy!

Dead easy.

Zuko decided to try something else and motioned in Sokka's direction and then made quick circles with his finger around his temple. Why yes, he was gossiping in silence. He needed to pay Sokka back for that flower after all.

More silent laughter and a head nodding up and down.

And maybe Aly wasn't so crazy for coming up with this. Though, Zuko most probably was misunderstanding his teacher's intentions.

Satisfied with his success, he leaned back a little and glanced around the classroom for something else to say. It probably shouldn't be about how hard Mel could hit.

Teacher it was and he motioned towards Aly and then... Well she was crazy sometimes, but he couldn't say/gesture that out loud because she was his teacher so he settled for making the motion to throw a knife. Indicating that she liked knives, not that he was planning on actually throwing one at her.

It took Luke a couple of seconds of wide-eye staring to finally get the interpretation of that one correctly.

Luke looked at Aly, then repeated the knife-throwing motion, then pointed to himself and gestured like he was using a sword.

It was a good thing Zuko was more familiar with swords than he was with baseball bats. He wouldn't recognise a baseball if it hit him in the head, really.

Perking up, he copied Luke's gesture and then repeated it with both hands. Dual blades!

Luke made a silent "oooh" sound, looking very impressed. Then he grinned and held out his hand.

His pen began spinning above it.

Zuko's eyes widened and he almost asked out loud if Luke was an airbender. He caught himself only just and quickly glanced towards Aly before he held out his hand and created a flame on his palm.

More silent applause. Luke was loving class today.

Well firebending was pretty awesome. Zuko thought so anyway, but now he was curious.

He motioned towards the pen Luke had move and then motioned around him into the air before raising an eyebrow in question.

Explaining the Force in hand gestures just wasn't going to happen, so Luke just nodded. It was kind of in the air around them, sure.

Zuko stared more and then leaned forward, hoping Aly wouldn't overhear. "You're an airbender?" he whispered, because this was more important.

Luke shook his head and wrote out "JEDI" in school supplies.
