Applied Inventiontronics, Period 4 - Week 7

The desks were paired off again, each with a set of tools, and there was a crate full of completely modable spare parts.

Yes, kids, it is project time again, and Glitch was standing at the front of the class looking very delighted by the whole thing. Really, this was probably his favorite kind of class to teach.

"Alright, class," he said with a smile. "Today, you're going to build something out of nothing. Pick up some parts and start to put them together. Don't worry if you can't get it to work or don't have a set design for it. It doesn't even have to have a real function, if you can't find one, heh. The point of this is for you to get an idea of what it's like to start building something with these materials."

There may or may not have been a moment or two where he bounced ever so slightly, but those moments should be ignored.

"And don't forget that after next weeks break, you'll need to be ready to bring in your preliminary designs for your final projects."

Nothing like ending the lecture on something to strike fear into the hearts of his students, though that wasn't entirely intended.

[ooc: The OCD is a work in progress up!]

"Is there anything in there that is similar to a hand?" Doom asked.

"Not exactly," Rodney shrugged. "But if all it has to do is high five, it won't exactly need an opposable thumb."

"We need to weld a thumb onto it," Doom said. "It's just not as awesome without the thumb."

"Oh, how silly of me," Rodney deadpanned. "We wouldn't want anyone to be confused as to if it's supposed to be a hand or not." He held up a random piece of roughly thumb-sized cylindrical metal. "Will this do?"

"That should do just fine," Doom said as he found a longish bit of conduit that could be used as an arm.

"Right, right," Rodney nodded. "Now we just need to figure out the mechanism for the movement." Even though it was a silly and useless idea, Rodney was willing to put some effort into it. It'd be pretty embarrassing if his lame project didn't even work.

"This would be simple enough if we had a motor among these parts," Doom said. "But to make it more fun, why not simply use a counterweight? We could make a trebuchet high fiving machine."

"Or if we had a robot that we could just take an arm off of," Rodney rolled his eyes. "All right," he said, finally getting serious, "the thing we'll have to keep in mind is that we don't want to take off someone's hand when the counterweight activates." He grabbed a piece of paper and started to sketch a design for it.

While Rodney sketched, Doom searched for a nice, chunky bit of scrap to use as the counterweight. "Not so awesome that a person is horrifically injured, but awesome enough that it may sting for a couple hours. Doom declares this design criteria to be acceptable."

"Do you have a design worked out yet?" Yes, he asked that after about ten seconds. He was impatient when it came to awesomeness.

"Yeah," Rodney lifted the paper with a flourish. "It's not like it's that complicated." It wasn't. "Can you find anything to attach the counterweight to the arm in there?"

[identity profile] honoraryphd.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Doom used the superhuman strength granted by his armor to ram the arm through the counterweight and hook it at the end so the counterweight wouldn't slide off. "Simple but effective."

Rodney reared back in his chair to get as far away from Doom's display of strength as possible. "Right. Good. Okay," he said placatingly.

"Now we just need the support structure to hold the arm and it will be high fives for all!" Doom declared.

Rodney dug through the spare parts again and pulled out a suitable looking base. "This should work," he said as he set it up. "But I'm not testing it," he muttered.

[identity profile] honoraryphd.livejournal.com 2008-02-19 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Doom will test it," Doom said. "He is the Lord of Awesome. This is Doom's right."

Doom raised his hand to the appropriate location for maximum hand-slappage.

"Let the machine swing when you're ready, Rodney. Doom is braced for the awesome."

He rolled his eyes. Again. "All set, Lord Awesome," Rodney knew it was a bad idea to encourage him, even if it was sarcastic, but he couldn't help it. It was rather amusing. He released the counterweight and the 'arm' swung upwards towards Doom's hand. So far, so good.

The high five connected.

"Doom deems this to be awesome. Good work, friend!"

"Yay for the awesome," Rodney deadpanned. Still he was pleased that their project had worked. Even if it was lame. "Thanks," he said with just the slightest smirk.
