Applied Inventiontronics, Period 4 - Week 7

The desks were paired off again, each with a set of tools, and there was a crate full of completely modable spare parts.

Yes, kids, it is project time again, and Glitch was standing at the front of the class looking very delighted by the whole thing. Really, this was probably his favorite kind of class to teach.

"Alright, class," he said with a smile. "Today, you're going to build something out of nothing. Pick up some parts and start to put them together. Don't worry if you can't get it to work or don't have a set design for it. It doesn't even have to have a real function, if you can't find one, heh. The point of this is for you to get an idea of what it's like to start building something with these materials."

There may or may not have been a moment or two where he bounced ever so slightly, but those moments should be ignored.

"And don't forget that after next weeks break, you'll need to be ready to bring in your preliminary designs for your final projects."

Nothing like ending the lecture on something to strike fear into the hearts of his students, though that wasn't entirely intended.

[ooc: The OCD is a work in progress up!]

"We could probably weld one or two of these babies on there, does that work?" she asked, immediately searching for a fourth if they were going to try that.

"That sounds like a good start, definitely..." Although he still wasn't sure what to do with it after that. He peeked into the crate, too. "There any wire in here? And maybe another tailpipe?"

Well, he found the other tailpipe....

Jaina was still going through things, placing some sort of coppery wire beside her, along with a couple of screws and the random nuts and bolts in case they needed them. "I've found a straight piece of pipe. Or would you rather it match that one?" she asked.

A.J. took a moment, eyes shifting to the side as if the answer laid somewheres over there, and considered it. "Mmmmm.....matching's for suckers," he decided. "The pipe'll have more weight. What I'm thinking is that we'll hook up some connector ring-things to each one of 'em, and then connect the two with some wire." His hands moved to demonstrate, gesturing. "Know what I mean?"

She nodded, a pretty clear image in her head. "Got it," she said, pulling out the piece of pipe to put it with the other pieces, and looking a little gleeful about getting to build stuff. You know, like every week.

"S'there a lot of that wire?" A.J. wondered, starting to work the tailpipe end of things not dirty. "I'm starting to think of a grid of sorts now..."

Why, he didn't know, but it would be pretty cool.

"There's a pretty good amount," Jaina said. "A grid?"

"Yeah, out of the wires, spanning the space between the pipes. Like a net sort of thing, only, well, made of wire, so it'll be stronger, and then, if we have two other pipes to go on the unaccounted for side, then, it's like...a pipe box. With a wire grid in it..."

Which sounded a lot cooler in his head, although he still maintained that it was cool.

She ran it over in her head, trying to find a purpose or a reason against it. The thing with that was that they weren't building anything specifically functional, so... "Why not," she said, starting to play with the wire in a fashion that would work the way he described, only bending and not cutting yet. "Like this?"

It's function, A.J. decided, was clearly to just be kinda cool. He beamed at Jaina's acceptance and nodded. "Exactly."

"Perfect," she said, quickly working the rest of the wire the same way. "Okay, there's that."
