How to Survive Your Own Cooking, Class 6

"I thought I'd give you all something of a fun class before the mid-term next week," Lulu said. "At each of the stations, you'll find both a typical pizza crust and a loaf of focaccia. Choose one or the other, top as you wish from the fully moddable toppings here at the front of the class, bake them in the already-preheated ovens, and then at the end of the class we'll have a contest for the best-topped flatbread." She grinned, an uncharacteristically wide smile. "Remember that not all pizzas require a tomato-based sauce, so try cream- or oil-based ones if you like. Also, focaccias tend not to have a sauce in the way that pizzas do, although you are free to experiment there if you wish.

"If you're not familiar with either focaccia or pizza, there are handouts at your station as well for you to read before you begin. If any of you have questions or concerns," and here she eyed a few of the students who had been... having difficulties, "please, please approach me."

"I'd like to give you a reminder as well: next week is your mid-term. You will be required to prepare a full meal, three courses -- salad, soup, and entree -- of your choice. You are notpermitted to use recipes directly from this class. The library, I'm sure, has a wide collection of cookbooks, and the internet as well has many resources for recipes. Find them, and then bring them in for next week. I'll be providing the dessert for the meal. Feel free to invite your friends to share in the food -- I imagine that many of them will need the break during the week."

[OCD will be up in a moment is up! I apologize for the lame-ish class, but I slept in today, and so it's a bit of a rush job. ^^;; Also, mmm pizza.]

"Which ones?" he prompted brightly. He was in a very good mood, really.

"The... reddish ones? And the dark colored ones?"

Because that was a useful description. Yep.

He considered the ingredients he'd helped prepare.

"The pepperoni? And... sausages or olives?"

"Maybe?" Or tomatoes or peppers or the sorts of unspeakable things Michaelangelo was probably putting on his own pizza.

He gestured to the ingredients.

"Well, I was thinking of sauteeing up some of the mushrooms, perhaps crisping up some spinach in oil and putting some slices of chicken in."

Cassandra's decision making when it came to food was... questionable at best. She decided to bow to Liir's expertise in the matter. "That sounds good."

He smiled.

"You're still coming on Wednesday, right?"

He started putting things together for his 'pizza'.

She stood still, watching. Observing. Learning.

"Yes. Tomorrow."

The mushrooms were chopped, the spinach laid out, and the chicken was cut up into small pieces. Then he went over to the stove and started heating up a pan with a little butter.

"Perhaps with a buttery cream sauce?" he thought out loud. "Could you prepare the crust?"

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] iseewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Of course she couldn't prepare the crust. She wasn't even sure what that entailed.

"Sure."

"All you have to do is place it on the pizza pan," he said, not unkindly. "And you can taste to make sure I don't over season the chicken."

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] iseewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh." She could do that! And she did.

"Chicken is fine," she decided. Of course she would have decided the same thing no matter what he did to it, so it wasn't much of an endorsement.

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
He smiled.

"I haven't made it yet," he pointed out. "When it's done, I'd like if you could taste it to make sure it isn't over seasoned for putting in the pizza."

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] iseewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh," she repeated.

"You'll let me know when?"

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll let you know when."

And he started to sautee the mushrooms.

"If you could collect the olive oil from over that way?"

He pointed.

"If you'd like a more active role, I'll step aside for things."

Cassandra moved to pick up the indicated bottle of oil. "This is fine," she said absently as she offered it to him.

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
He moved the mushrooms around for a few minutes in the butter before putting the pan aside.

"All right. I don't want to take up your lesson, that's all."

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] iseewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
She shook her head. "I'm learning a lot." Which was true. Watching someone who knew what they were doing was incredibly educational. If you knew how to watch.

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
He did the spinach next, frying it into crunchy strips.

"I was thinking to put the spinach and the mushrooms on top, perhaps with a few diced peppers for color, and slip the chicken under the cheese so as to keep it moist."

He considered.

"Actually, a sauce mostly of peppers might work. Red or orange, I think."

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] iseewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
"..." Cassandra had no idea what he was talking about. "Sounds good."

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
"For color," he said. "And something to perk up the taste, at least, I think so. The butter might not work well with the peppers, though. I'll have to see..."

Re: Pair Up [Class 6]

[identity profile] iseewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2008-02-13 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
She just watched him. It wasn't like Cassandra had anything useful to add. It hadn't occurred to her to be worried about the upcoming mid-term.

And Liir kept going. (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1688938.html?thread=103872874#t103872874)
