Applied Inventiontronics, Perid 4 - Week 6

Glitch was at the front of the class again today, and on each desk were a few sheets of clean, un-lined paper and two pencils.

"Today, you're going to be working on the look of your inventions. For the first half of the class, I want you to sketch out a design. It doesn't have to be too detailed, but, the idea is that you'll get a feel for how it will all come together and look when it's done. Remember things like functionality and overall aesthetic appeal."

He smiled reassuringly at them, because this next part he was afraid they wouldn't really like.

"The second half of class, you'll be showing your sketches to your classmates and critiquing each other." There was a stern look before he continued with, "Nicely, please."

A moment, then, as he looked at them a bit expectantly before he realized he hadn't told them yet to begin.

"Oh, uhm, right. Go ahead. Begin!"

"Oooh, magic stuff!" Willow perked up. "Yeah, Ozian I might not know, but Earth things I should be able to help out with. Do you have a list?"

He pulled up his diagram and pointed out each piece as he spoke.

"An iron outer shell, to keep out magical interference. A copper inner shell to keep other memories from seeping in. There would be a hole here where an emerald lens would increase the focus and the clarity of the memories you'd be recording, hooked to a moritanium channel, swiveled around a quartz crystal."

He pointed to the main crystal.

"That would be Lurlinite, with pieces of boric titanate on either side. And beneath, in this chamber, is a few chips of fizzelite that should keep up a charge as long as someone is moving around. When they're not, this panel here," and he pointed, "would pick up the body heat to power the device as only a small current is needed between the moirtanium here and the chips of boric titanite for the device to work. There's also a admonite failsafe mechanism here, but I haven't quite figured out how to trigger it properly."

"Cool!" Willow said as she looked at it. "So far all the earthy stuff sounds good. Nothing's leaping out at me as a 'oh no, change this or we're all gonna die!'

He blushed, just a little.

"And there was, uh, something of an experience this weekend which makes me think that the device might work to remember things that have already happened if a person wants them to," he said, "so it might work as originally intended as well, though I'll have to experiment with it once I have a prototype made up."

"Do you have any guinea pigs set up for your experiments?" Willow asked. "Only not actual guinea pigs because they're not like the squirrels. They won't be able to write the results down for you. At least not the ones you can find here."

He shook his head.

"Not yet."

Then he quirked.

"I didn't even think of that."

He gave her a mildly embarrassed smile.

"I guess I didn't think I'd get that far."

"I'm huge into the scientific method," Willow admitted. "It helps keep things neat and orderly."

"There's a method?"

Oh boy.

"Oh yes," Willow said. "You start out with an idea - like 'this invention should work'. Then you test it. Then if it works, woohoo! If not, tweak and test again."

"That's just common sense," he said with a skeptical look.

"Though now that you mention it, I can't think of anyone I'd want to ask to test it. After all, it might be unpleasant if it doesn't work correctly."

Willow nodded. "This is true. Though you never know around here. Maybe somebody has special memory powers. Not that I'm aware of anyone who does, but on the other hand neither have I asked."

Liir was very much not looking at Willow.

"No one I've spoken to either," he said. "And Professor Ambrose doesn't seem to think it would be very common."

It's the truth, even if he's very very good at carving the truth.
