Choosing Your Own Government--Monday, Period 5, Class #6--Crime and Punishment

Vala awaited her class in the Danger Shop, where they had been handwavily informed to meet her. Inside was a set up of a dark, dank, but slightly out-of-date prison complex.

"Good afternoon. Now, I know this is a rather extreme way to prove a point, but whether you're a hereditary monarch, a crazy mass-murdering fuckhead future German Chancellor, an opponent of legal racial inequality, or any number of other political prisoners advocating change, chances are you're going to end up in one of these, at least for a little while. So."

"First, I want you all to choose your own cells." She waited until everyone was settled, then closed the doors and locked them with a metallic clang. "Your goal is to get out of here. Period. How do you do that? In each of those cells are the fully moddable resources you need to get out of the cell, or you can do your time to prove a point and wait for them to release you. Either way, but I need a rationale of who you are, and what you're doing there, then how you plan to get out."

"Think of it as an acting exercise, but the goal here is to understand that government has both the power to lock you up, and the power to set you free, whether for a good reason, or no reason at all. Think about that while you work."

Gwynn did not like this at all as it came way too close to her own life for comfort.

She didn't protest as she understood what Vala was trying to teach them, but that didn't change the fact her complexion was a bit paler than earlier.

Evey was there. Exceptionally quiet and tense-looking, but there.

Evey was doing her very best not to show any signs of how the lesson was affecting her. She'd had advance warning of it, and she'd lived through this once already. And it was only for an hour. Presumably she'd be allowed to keep her hair. And there wouldn't be any torture.

It didn't really comfort her, and Evey was already starting to feel claustrophobic and sick, her brain frantically attempting to shut off her emotions. She'd dull herself, just for this hour, just as she had for those months and months on end. She could get through one class.

She wasn't afraid to go back in a cell, of course. But it certainly wasn't on her list of things she'd wanted to do when she got up that morning.

Anemone was quite used to being a guest of the government, thank you very much, although her cell quarters usually had white walls and bolted-down things. Definitely nothing you could pick up, let alone throw or use against someone. Weird government. Must be run by committee or something.

Karal had been watching her out of the corner of his eyes. For no reason, really.

Partway through the lecture, he moved closer and leaned towards her. "Evey?" he said very quietly, not wanting to attract the wrath of Vala.

Karal listened quietly, not sure he liked this at all.

But he'd participate, though he found himself missing Altra even more.

Two weeks he'd missed, and offered no explanation.

It was a rather hangdog looking Karal who approached Vala after class.

Evey glanced over, carefully schooling her features. It didn't work as well as she thought, though. "Yes?"

Wordlessly, he offered her his hand.

She gratefully took it, not quite smiling but looking marginally less anxious.

He squeezed her fingers gently, smiling as reassuringly as he knew how, and shifted just a little bit closer. Karal wanted to ask her why she was so upset. He wanted to tell her that everything would be all right.

What he said, or asked, rather, was, "When class is over, would you like to try riding Trenor?"

This wasn't the place to talk; something else to think about might help.

It caught her off guard, and did distract her, even just a little bit. "Okay." She could explain, then. She could explain now, really, but there was no need to call attention to herself.

His smile was bright and warm and he squeezed her hand again. "We can ride on the beach, it's the best place on the island to gallop."

"That sounds...fast," Evey said, almost smiling.
