Adah came in for her day at the library with the distinct conviction that people just weren't worth the trouble it took to deal with them. She felt she could honestly say that, too, as she had been attempting to be social quite a lot this last week, and look where it got her. Waking up fresh from another bizarre dream of Africa and feeling horrible. Books, she figured, were a much better companion; usually, she knew if an author was going to throw a temper tantrum at her, and if she didn't like it, close the book, get a new one. Books were also very good at making barricades around the desk, hiding her from people...and kissing. People, on the other hand, would be much harder to get to cooperate, unless they were dead, and Adah doubted she could ever really kill anyone.

She did, behind her wall of books with just enough space so that if someone really did need help or Bob came around and did not approve, then she could depend on those to defend herself. And she was slowly nursing a warm mug of tea, toh, yerg lrae. Maybe that would make her feel better in not too long.

Although that first option did seem tempting, Adah was in absolutely no mood to admit to it. She considered the second one as well, but, realizing that it would just drive her crazy with thinking about him, she ventured toward another possible option.

She bit her lip, as if reluctance was making her hesitant to do anything that didn't perpetuate her sour mood.

"Can you stand on your head and do tricks?" she offered, with the faintest beginnings of a wry grin.

"I can stand on my head," he said, nodding. "Not sure if I can do tricks though. Most my attention would be on keeping my balance."

"Oh, you don't have to," Adah responded with a little bit more of a grin. She'd felt, just then, that she'd just about hit as close to bottom as she'd ever allowed herself to get, and any more effort in holding herself there would just be too exhausting to bother with. "I think just the fact that you said you would is all I need. Besides, you'd do it, and then I'd have to hate you for having useless physical abilities."

"Of course, now, one day I am going to have to stand on my head just so you can laugh at how much balance I don't have," he said. "Don't hate me."

"Like I could ever laugh at anyone else for having a lack of balance," Adah pointed out lightly.

Or hate him, for that matter, although sometimes, like today, she really wished she could.

"I could read to you," he suggested. "Quiet, relaxing activity."

"I might make you read something really awful and complicated and boring," Adah warned him, because she still insisted on propagating the idea that she was difficult and he had to be vaguely insane for putting up with her.

"I can make it interesting," he promised. "I'm good at that."

And that sounded a bit like a challenge. "Okay, then," Adah said, and nodded toward one of her stacks. "The second row, there. There's a virology (http://www.amazon.com/Principles-Virology-Molecular-Biology-Pathogenesis/dp/1555812597/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202350505&sr=8-3) book that I checked out last week. You can start with that one."

She figured that, because the material was one so familiar with her, that countered out the advantage he would have in the fact that she actually found it interesting subject matter. And she might have been interested to see if he struggled or not when reading out loud about the finer points of pathogenesis and infection control.

"Fine," he said and snatched the book from the stack.

And balked at how big the words were. Of course, that meant he had to break out the big guns.

So, he opened the book and started reading. In different voices. High pitched, twang, low pitched, breathy, whisper, anything he could think of.

Really, Adah should have been prepared for that but, somehow, she wasn't. She might have called him out on that twang as possibly mocking her own voice, but she was too preoccupied with her hand balled up in a fist against her mouth to not only keep from laughing, but to keep the reluctantly blossoming grin out of sight. And, unfortunately, a snort slipped out before she'd managed to completely gather her composure. Something about 'NMR spectroscopy' being spoken in a breathy whisper was just not be reckoned with.

And Lee kept going, adapting a female voice, a deep male growl and speaking a few paragraphs in a dog's bark.

He thought himself quite talented.
