Library [02/03]

Since Lee had been kind enough to cover his shift on Monday, Sam was in the library today. He was hoping for a quiet day, so he could do some more researching.

Sam took his bagel apart and mixed the cream cheese and jelly together a little more before putting it back together. "Are you sure?" he asked. "That you've been getting enough sleep, I mean."

Dawn was absurdly proud as she watched Sam play with his food. Almost as if she'd rubbed off on him somehow.

"Well, I can't sleep, so that must be a sign that I don't need any, right?"

"Or it's a sign that something's wrong," Sam said lightly, licking his fingers.

Dawn, in a move she'd probably be sorry for later, met Sam's eyes and lied straight to his face. "I'm fine. Really."

Sam kept his eyes meeting hers, but wasn't sure if he could believe that. "You know, you've almost never let me get away with that. You don't expect me to do the same, do you?"

"I do if it's true." The last thing he needed right now was to worry more about her.

Sam paused before trying a different approach. "You'd tell me if something was wrong, wouldn't you? So I could help fix it?"

"I don't think there's anything that can be fixed." Which really wasn't an answer.

"Everything can be fixed if we just try," Sam replied.

Not particularly hungry, she set the sandwich aside. "What if it can't?"

"We try harder," Sam said, watching her carefully. "But we can only do that if you tell me what's wrong."

She couldn't tell Sam that she was having nightmares about burning alive. The guilt would kill him. "It brought up some bad memories of the Glory variety. I'll get better."

Sam frowned softly, and nodded. "Is there anything I can do to help? I don't know what could stop nightmares, but I can do some research..."

"No magic," she shook her head, "Just me, healing like mostly normal people. Okay?"

"Okay. I can help with that too," Sam said. "I see lots of cuddling in your future."

"I like this future."

"Me too," Sam agreed.

"Soooooo," Dawn traced patterns into the top of the desk. "We're good? I mean, like, all the way good?"

"I think we are," Sam said. "I really, really want us to be good."

"Me too." Which didn't mean she wasn't going to take Dean up on his suggestion and jump Sam at some point, just to make sure. "Fighting with you sucks."

"Always," Sam said. "And I didn't want to fight with you about any of this."

"I wasn't really thrilled with it either," she hopped down off the desk and went around so she could hug him properly, all scootched up against his chest, safe and warm. "I won't say no more, but--maybe not unless we can help it?"

Sam was definitely in the mood for a proper hug, and pulled her in tight. "I like the sound of that a lot."

"Okay." Still not so much with the letting go. "So we have a plan. You here all day?"

"Yep. Lee worked for me on Monday so I could stay with Dean, so I'm here all day today instead."
