Mac was settled behind the front desk all day.

There wasn't much real work to be done, so she was perusing webcomics.

"You're further than I am," Mac said with a chuckle. "I'm still very much in the planning stages. Figuring out what the hell I want it to do. Seems to me all the useful inventions have already been invented."

"Mine seems to confuse people," he said. "So I don't know if it's useful, really, or if people are just being kind."

He peered curiously at her.

"You haven't had any ideas?"

"Well, I've had ideas, just nothing I like, yet," Mac said pulling a face.

"Oh? What were your ideas?"

He was curious.

Mac shrugged. "Just a insert totally handwavey, but relatively sound idea here. I'm more for the computer technology than I am actual invention-y things."

"You?"

"I'm trying to figure out a device to record memories like a person so that they can be retrieved or replaced if they're taken from someone," he said.

It sounded so silly sometimes, until he remembered Professor Ambrose.

Mac blinked. "I assume that's one that'll need something magical in there?" she guessed. She didn't know any normal technology that could do that, at least.

He shook his head.

"No, I'm trying to avoid it if I can," he said. "Willow said one of the other witches on campus might be able to help, but I'm trying to do it without using magic. It should be possible."

"Really?" Mac looked impressed. "You'll have to enlighten me on that once you figure it out. I've never heard of anyone being able to actually store memories."

"Photos, video... that sort of thing, but not actual memories."

He shook his head.

"I'm trying to use crystals, mostly, but everything stores memory."

He patted the counter.

"The counter remembers every book that's crossed over it, every pair of hands, everything that's ever been done to it. The memories are there if you listen for them."

He pulled a hand away.

"The problem is, that's all it remembers. I'm trying to figure out something that will remember like a person. It's more... extensive. More expansive."

Mac had stopped leaning on the counter mid-way through that little spiel, and was instead eyeing it warily.

"You know, that kind of reminds me of when all the furniture came to life, or the washing machine rebellion, or the books," she said. "You're right, they do have a surprising memory. Especially around here." She just usually didn't think of it that way.

He couldn't help the mildly Wicked grin at her wary eyes.

"It's still a counter."

He blinked, though.

"The furniture came to life?"

HA!

"And the washing ticktocks rebelled? I'm utterly not surprised."

"Mmm." Mac pulled a face. "Kept holding clothes hostage and leaving people naked in hallways." She decided not to mention her own issues with that.

"Not a good time," she summarised.

"That was a while ago," Mac promised him. "Hasn't happened in at least a year... probably more like a year and a half. You'll be fine."

He shook his head.

"I didn't like them even before I heard about them rebelling. While ticktocks make sense for some things, the idea of one washing my clothes is not something I particularly like."

"Ticktocks?" Mac asked with a curious furrow of her brows. "That's one I haven't heard before."

"Machines," he corrected. "That's generally what they're called at home."

"Huh." Mac nodded. "Where is it you're from?" she asked.

He didn't sound all that enthused. Propaganda aside, it wasn't all that wonderful. Well, not his little corner of it. Or the Emerald City. Munchkinland hadn't sounded too pleasant either. And Quadling Country hadn't been anything to call home about for years.

Er.
