Library [1/02]

This morning there was a closed library, there was a Karal, and there was a Firecat.

Soon after, there was an open library and a Karal with a cup of tea.

There was still a Firecat around somewhere, but he was well hidden today.

Karal was working to get his library chores done as quickly as possible this morning. He had plans for the rest of the day.

You might have to make some noise to get his attention. Not too much noise, though. It was still a library.

Satisfied that the books were shelved, the shelves were tidied, and the tidying was done, he was sitting at one of the tables, completely lost in what he was doing. He had two leather bound books - one he was reading from, and one he was writing in.

Third period, same as the second.

The library was starved for variety today - Karal was still working on his project while Altra ate his lunch.

Oh, and its closed to anyone but library workers and, of course, Bob.

And the day continued apace.

Except there was now a Firecat stalking Karal's foot.

Altra was just a wee bit bored.

Okay, wtf keyboard? I NEED MY N KEY. And my number keys. And the rest of the ones that you're randomly refusing to acknowledge.

You suck. As does this horrible spare.

/whining

Hobo Karal scares me. And my N, H, and Y keys reject me on a regular basis. *feels your pain*

On his way to work, he swung by the library with a small covered plate (and a small covered bowl).

"Karal?" He said as he walked in, putting them on the main counter.

Lunch. For Karal and Altra. He hoped they liked chicken.

I'd like to put in a second "eep" to Hobo!Karal.

Sometime during second period, Sam came into the library with a handful of books. Sure, he could have dealt with them himself the next time he was in the library, but he also wanted to take the time to talk to Karal.

Eh. I'd still hop on it.

Karal's voice carried out of the stacks. "I'm here," he called. "Just give me one moment."

It was more than one, definitely, before he came out, and he smiled at Liir. "Liir, good morning," he said cheerfully.

It took Karal a few moments to notice him. He looked up, blinked as he came back to here and now, then smiled. "Sam, hello."

He got up and walked over, hands out to take the books. "Are you well today?"

Karal or the N Key?

"Good morning," he said. Then he pointed to the covered plate and the wrapped bowl.

"I know it's a bit early, but I figured I'd bring by some of yesterday's cooking if you'd like to have it for lunch. Chicken and rice."

He looked around for Altra.

"There's just chicken in the bowl. That's for Altra. I made sure to take out all the vegetables."

Firecats could appear from nowhere, and often there was no magic involved beyond that of the ordinary feline variety. Liir suddenly had a purring Firecat twining around his legs. :I knew I liked you.:

Karal reached out to take the plate and the bowl, chuckling at Altra. "That's very kind of you, thank you," he said and sniffed. "It smells wonderful."

"Pretty well," Sam replied, giving Karal the books. "I don't have any classes today, so I got to sleep in a little. How are you?"

"It actually came out correctly, and there was plenty left," he admitted. "I'm not used to cooking for two."

He reached down to offer his hand for scritching. He wouldn't pet an Animal without invitation; it'd be rude.

"And Andrew liked it."

Altra purred and bumped his head against Liir's hand.

Karal's smile was incredibly affectionate. "I'm sure he did. Was it nice to cook for him?" he asked while he set the food down on the desk.

He hadn't thought to bring lunch with him, so it was particularly welcome. "And if that question was too nosy, please, ignore it."

He tucked the books away on the desk. "I'm good, a distracted by what I was working on, which is why I didn't see you come in," he explained sheepishly. "Have you time to stay and talk for a bit? I could make tea, or coffee if you'd prefer."

"I used to cook at Kiamo Ko," he said. "Someone had to. Nanny couldn't stand for long."

He petted Altra's head and neck with the utmost care.

"He liked it, so yes, it was nice. Let me know how you like it. I can write up the recipe if you'd want it."

"Yeah, I have some time," Sam said, looking concerned. "Is everything okay?"

"Glory, thank you, but the dorms would end up going up in flames," he laughed. "Cooking and I are not friends at all, and if it tastes as good as it smells, I'd be tempted to try. It would not end well."

Altra snickered and looked up. :I remember the attempt at an omelette. And the only reason the pancakes didn't burn down the kitchen was thanks to Dean.:

"Oh, yes!" he said quickly. "Truly, it's fine." He busied himself making coffee, deciding Sam might prefer it to tea, and carried two mugs over to the table. "Come and sit?"

Sam sat down and took the coffee gratefully. "So, what's up?"
