Library [1/02]

This morning there was a closed library, there was a Karal, and there was a Firecat.

Soon after, there was an open library and a Karal with a cup of tea.

There was still a Firecat around somewhere, but he was well hidden today.

Firecats could appear from nowhere, and often there was no magic involved beyond that of the ordinary feline variety. Liir suddenly had a purring Firecat twining around his legs. :I knew I liked you.:

Karal reached out to take the plate and the bowl, chuckling at Altra. "That's very kind of you, thank you," he said and sniffed. "It smells wonderful."

"It actually came out correctly, and there was plenty left," he admitted. "I'm not used to cooking for two."

He reached down to offer his hand for scritching. He wouldn't pet an Animal without invitation; it'd be rude.

"And Andrew liked it."

Altra purred and bumped his head against Liir's hand.

Karal's smile was incredibly affectionate. "I'm sure he did. Was it nice to cook for him?" he asked while he set the food down on the desk.

He hadn't thought to bring lunch with him, so it was particularly welcome. "And if that question was too nosy, please, ignore it."

"I used to cook at Kiamo Ko," he said. "Someone had to. Nanny couldn't stand for long."

He petted Altra's head and neck with the utmost care.

"He liked it, so yes, it was nice. Let me know how you like it. I can write up the recipe if you'd want it."

"Glory, thank you, but the dorms would end up going up in flames," he laughed. "Cooking and I are not friends at all, and if it tastes as good as it smells, I'd be tempted to try. It would not end well."

Altra snickered and looked up. :I remember the attempt at an omelette. And the only reason the pancakes didn't burn down the kitchen was thanks to Dean.:

"Then you'll have to remember that if you want something, I'll be happy to cook it for you," he said. "It's only fair, after all."

"Fair?" he asked curiously.

He looked sideways at Karal.

"You're always there for me to talk to or ask questions, because you're good at that.

"I'm not much of a cook, but I don't burn things down. If you want something made, I can make it for you."

Karal smiled at that and looked down at his feet. "All right, I'll remember," he promised. "Thank you."

"You're welcome."

He smiled, just a little.

"And this was one thing I sort of enjoyed, when I could make what I liked."

"Then how about if you make me something that you like to cook," he suggested. "I'm not at all fussy about food, glory, I wouldn't even know what to suggest!" A near-lifetime of living in Cloister, Temple, and then palace, with servants and cooks, had something to do with that. "I'd enjoy it even more knowing that you'd liked making it."

"Perhaps I'll make it a habit to bring you your lunch on Fridays, before I head to work," he said with a faint smile. "After all, that way you won't have to remember to bring it."

And now he was blushing. "I, ah, forget a lot of the time," he admitted. "And you don't have to do that. You could still stop by, though, if you wanted to."

He smiled and nodded.

He'd bring lunch. Every Friday. Whether Karal asked or not.

...Altra, after all, deserved a proper meal.
