"The business of the day is stew," Lulu began. "Most stews are thickened with flour, or occasionally corn starch; this recipe is one I prefer, in which the barley, and to a lesser extent the rice and lentils, thicken the stew on their own. Harry eyed the stovetop a little warily, then turned to Makato. "So should we start the stuff boiling and chop while we wait?"

"If you set it on high it'll get really hot quick," Makoto said helpfully. See? He knew this. "So we'd have to be pretty quick about chopping."

"Good point. But if we both chop it should work out, right? And it won't mess it up too much if it boils a little longer before we add everything, will it?"

"That sounds about right. I don't think it'd mess up badly. Not if it's just water," he said, getting a knife ready to chop things with, "I'm pretty sure water won't go bad from over-heating a little."
