Applied Inventiontronics, Period 4 - Week 4

The classroom today was a bit different. The desks were all paired off, and for each set there was a strange spinny thing, a small set of tools and a question sheet.

Glitch was at the front of the class, standing at a bit of a distance from the desk. It might want some space after last week.

"Today, you'll be taking apart those mini sterling engines , putting them back together, and filling out the worksheet. Don't worry too much about the questions and just answer them as best you can. Sorry, but, you'll have to work in teams for it because I didn't have enough to go around." He gave them an apologetic smile. "When you're finished, bring it and your answers to my desk and pick up one of these packets to go over."

He picked one up from the top of the pile before finally sitting at his desk. "I'll be here to answer any questions during and after class. I'll be in my office tomorrow, too, if you need anything then." He sat back a bit and started to read over the packet again to refresh his synapses if there were any questions.

[ooc: OCD is on its way up like an upping thing!]

"Me, too!" Sokka agreed. He settled in to watch her and got a good look at the multitool. "...WOW! Where can I get one of THOSE???"

Jaina had to smile at that. "These things seem to be a big hit," she said, still carefully taking pieces apart. "This one was... I don't know, maybe Corellia? I've had it a while."

Sokka had no idea where "Corellia" was, but given that Luke was an alien, he could guess how far, far away it was. "So... What you're saying is, not Turtle & Canary. Tell you what: If you bring me back one of those next time you go home, I'll give you a bunch of gold coins."

He focused his attention on the device, which seemed to be all moving parts and no power source. "Definitely not electric, then..."

"I'll see what I can do," she promised. "And nope, not electric. I wonder if it's just heat, or if cold'll do it, too. Hm. Probably should have considered that before I took a multitool to it."

"You are awesome," Sokka told her, before moving on to consider her question. "No, probably not, because heat is, like, energy, but cold is, like, not..."

He trailed off and poked at the machine's innards. "That's odd, I don't see any boiler..." he muttered, and then exclaimed "NO!"

His eyes burned with excitement. "No! No no no, wait, wait, YES! No! YES! Look!" He pointed. "There are two halves, and they're, like, insulated from each other, but only one side is connected with the bottom where I was holding it, so we'll call that the hot end and the other the cold end, right? And I still have no clue how it works, but they look more or less the same, I think, sort of, so I don't think it matters which end is the hot end and which is the cold end, just that one end is hotter than the other!"

He grinned and looked to see if she was following his twisted logic. "Which means that yes, the answer to your question is yes: if you put cold on the bottom, it will run backwards. I think."

He exhaled dramatically and looked pretty pleased with himself.

"...Unless it's demon-powered. Which it still might be; you don't know."
