Applied Inventiontronics, Period 4 - Week 4

The classroom today was a bit different. The desks were all paired off, and for each set there was a strange spinny thing, a small set of tools and a question sheet.

Glitch was at the front of the class, standing at a bit of a distance from the desk. It might want some space after last week.

"Today, you'll be taking apart those mini sterling engines , putting them back together, and filling out the worksheet. Don't worry too much about the questions and just answer them as best you can. Sorry, but, you'll have to work in teams for it because I didn't have enough to go around." He gave them an apologetic smile. "When you're finished, bring it and your answers to my desk and pick up one of these packets to go over."

He picked one up from the top of the pile before finally sitting at his desk. "I'll be here to answer any questions during and after class. I'll be in my office tomorrow, too, if you need anything then." He sat back a bit and started to read over the packet again to refresh his synapses if there were any questions.

[ooc: OCD is on its way up like an upping thing!]

Jaina, who was far too happy to be able to take something apart and put it back together, watched in amusement. "Having fun?"

"It, uh... It shouldn't be able to DO that," Sokka said, blinking at Jaina in amazement.

[OOC: Edited because I'm an idiot and didn't realize that the packets came LATER, and we're supposed to figure the things out on our own. *headdesk*]

"Yes, it should. It'll have been designed to run off some sort of energy, or start after being triggered somehow," she said, studying it.

"I didn't trigger it," Sokka insisted, putting the spinning engine back down on the table. "I don't think it even has an 'on' switch. And it didn't start until a little bit after I picked it up, anyway."

He stared at it some more. "It... could be powered by some sort of demon, maybe? Something that deliberately turns it on and off in order to amuse itself?"

"Doubtful." And Jaina, with all her experience, had a pretty good idea of the trigger, but she wanted to take it apart before confirming it. "If it took a second to start up, it means it's waiting for the, uh, power source to really kick in. It's not an immediate process, like punching a few buttons and forcing a start."

"Uh-huh." The engine, back on the cool desk for a while, had been slowing and stopped spinning. Sokka blinked at it and picked it up again. "...So... I'M the power source somehow?"

"Not you specifically, but I bet it anyone picked it up it'd do the same thing," Jaina nodded.

Sokka rolled his eyes. Obviously. "So... What do you think's powering it? Chi? I don't think it's bioelectric" -- boy, he was proud of himself for knowing that word --"because I don't think that would generate enough power?"
solo_sword: (well then)

"No, it wouldn't. My guess is thermal. Yay for body heat," she said.

"Would THAT generate enough power?" Sokka asked. "Well, if you're right... DAMN, I'm hot!" He grinned and set it down again.

"All right, so... do we take it apart now? Or... Can you use your magic Jedi powers to... I dunno" -- Sokka waved his hands around vaguely -- "figure it out somehow?"

"What's the fun in that?" Jaina grinned. "Let's get to work."
