The classroom today was a bit different. The desks were all paired off, and for each set there was a strange spinny thing, a small set of tools and a question sheet.

Glitch was at the front of the class, standing at a bit of a distance from the desk. It might want some space after last week.

"Today, you'll be taking apart those mini sterling engines , putting them back together, and filling out the worksheet. Don't worry too much about the questions and just answer them as best you can. Sorry, but, you'll have to work in teams for it because I didn't have enough to go around." He gave them an apologetic smile. "When you're finished, bring it and your answers to my desk and pick up one of these packets to go over."

He picked one up from the top of the pile before finally sitting at his desk. "I'll be here to answer any questions during and after class. I'll be in my office tomorrow, too, if you need anything then." He sat back a bit and started to read over the packet again to refresh his synapses if there were any questions.

He nodded like a blur.

"You?"

There was a blink at the blur, then he nodded.

"Went to a ball."

That might have been a bit of a goofy smile. Maybe. Who could tell, really?

"Oh?" he asked, curious. "With anyone? Or did you just enjoy the dancing?"

"No, not with anyone, but I did dance." With your boss. Nope, not saying that part. Least not yet.

He smiled.

"I'm glad you had a good time. There was someone dancing the other day, but that was all."

He gave a brief, teasing grin.

"No dancing for the students, apparently."

"So, did you get a chance to talk to your friend?"

Yes, that was genuine concern and not just a change of topic.

Another of those nods.

"Yes, we talked. He's... he wants to be friends. We sat together for a while on the roof. It was nice."

There was a brief pause, his usual, before he continued.

"I'm going to show him how to make the Lurline's Tears I baked for him last week," he explained, "and wash his clothes without a ticktock."

Lurline's Tears?

"Lurline's Tears? You don't bake those..."

Technology changed, maps changed, you would think Glitch would realize that cooking terms? Have also changed.

He blinked.

"Yes, you do," he said. "You have to, or the center doesn't melt right."

"But the go sour in heat."

"Possibly," he said s l o w l y. "But you do have to bake them. They're a cookie. And the center needs to melt down into the little bit like glass in the middle."

He blinked. "Ok. So, not the fizzigrapes?"

Glitch was really never going to get used to this.

He shook his head and reached into his bag for the remainders from the batch that he'd saved. Mostly it was the ones that'd been burned at the edges or where the 'tear' had been browned or the cookie had warped in the stove.

It was a round cookie with a center panel that was clear, almost like stained glass. It was made from melted sugar candy but it was clear enough to see through... well, as well as you would the bottom of a beer bottle.

Glitch kind of peered at them for a moment and then nodded.

"I am never going to get used to this."

"The cookies?"
