Library [Saturday]

Mac was totally oblivious to anything weird about today. She usually is.

She came into the library early and settled behind the desk with her laptop and coffee, as usual, ready to help anyone who came in.

"You just... seem older," Mac said thoughtfully as she looked at him. It seemed a little more tactful than 'you have a whacking great scar'.

"Haven't we all since the bomb?" Peter replied.

"... Bomb?"

"Five years ago?" Peter said. If his features seemed harder as he mentioned it - well he wasn't exactly relaxed to begin with. "Nuclear explosion in New York? Don't tell me they made you forget that too."

Mac shook her head. "No bomb," she told him. "Not in any reality I know about, anyway. New York is all in tact. I went there, with you, just a month or two back."

Peter's breath caught. "It hasn't happened yet? Sylar didn't explode?"

"I don't think so." Mac shrugged. "It's 2008," she added helpfully.

"They brought me back?" Peter turned this over in his mind. "No. They wouldn't. It must've been Hiro. He must've figured out how to stop it."

"Hiro?" Mac was getting confused again, and really, she was supposed to be the one who wasn't completely lost. "Brought you back from where?"

"The future," Peter said. "After the bomb. Hiro's been trying to fix it but I never really believed it could happen."

Peter left off the part about how he had good reason to believe that he personally was unable to stop the bomb. At least on his own.

"It's supposed to have already happened?" Mac asked. "Because if so, it definitely hasn't. We'd have heard."

"So it can be stopped," Peter said. "I just have to find out how."

Mac frowned, still utterly puzzled. "I... guess it must be. But, I don't even know where to start on figuring out how it was stopped."

"I'll have to find out what happened to Sylar," Peter said. "If the bomb hasn't happened, then he's still alive. That's the key."

"I don't think he's here..." Mac said after a moment. "I mean, I've never heard of him."

"No, he'd been laying low," Peter said. "Trying to shore up his powers. Hopefully he still hasn't gotten to Claire."

"There... is someone called Claire," Mac told him. "I don't really know her, and, not exactly an uncommon name, but..." She shrugged.

"Cheerleader?" Peter asked.

"Quite possibly. There is a team." Mac gave him a wry smile. "I usually make it a point to avoid anything involving cheerleading."

"Maybe that's why I'm here," Peter said. "Maybe I did something wrong the first time I saved her. Maybe I have to do it again."

"Maybe..." Mac said slowly. "I think around here, anyone trying to hurt someone else will have a really tough time of it."

"They'd have a tougher time trying to get by me," Peter said. He let one of his hands light up with a burst of power. "I'm stronger now, and there's no way I'm letting anyone hurt my niece."

Mac stared, taking a step back. "Ooookay."

"Sorry." Peter took a step back so Mac could feel safer. "Stopping the bomb means a lot to me."

"I'm beginning to get that," Mac said. Now keeping a slightly more careful eye on him.

"It'll be better," he told her. "Once I fix it."

"If it hasn't happened... doesn't that mean it's already fixed?" Mac asked.

Peter shook his head. "It just means it hasn't happened yet."
