Ethics [Thursday, January 17]

"Today we discuss lying," Anakin said as he closed the classroom door precisely on time. "Everyone lies. 'Of course that doesn't make your butt look big.' 'You like her, I like her.' 'I'm totally okay with you moving on.' 'Everything's fine, why do you ask?' It's how the world goes around because no one wants to be trapped in a conversation where someone whines at you for hours on end about how awful their life is."

He looked around the room. "Trust me. Everyone's life is terrible. They're just not telling you about it. Be grateful."

He reached onto his desk for a piece of paper. "Today we're conducting an exercise to see how well you pass this particular social ritual, then we'll discuss whether you think it is necessary. We're playing two truths and a lie. I'll tell you three things about myself and you have to decide which one is the falsehood. Then you'll all tell three things and we'll see how well you can either read each other or keep things hidden."

He gave them a small smile. "I'm very good at this." He schooled his face to absolute neutrality, put his mental blocks up to bar any psychics in the room from gaining an advantage, then recited: "During a war at home I was known as 'The Hero Without Fear.' I named my children after people I met in Fandom. I've never been beaten in one-on-one lightsaber combat." His eyes challenged them to call him out. "Who's next?"

Disregarding for the moment what Jenny thought of 'The Hero Without Fear' as a nickname... "Everyone loses at least once."

"Really," said Jenny, raising her eyebrow right back. "Or did you start off perfect and get better? Sir."

"Lightsaber combat," Jo replied, and not just because she was pretty sure Luke could take him, really.

Karal studied Anakin for a long time before deciding. "I don't think you named your children after people you met in Fandom."

Which left Karal with somewhat of a problem, because it was partly the things Luke had told him that had made him pick that answer, and they were things that had been told him in confidence.

"Well, the nickname seems a bit farfetched, which means it's probably not a lie. The same reasoning holds true for the lightsaber combat. Because both sound as if they aren't likely to be true, chances are, in this instance, they both are."

Romeo twirled his pen as he thought. He could believe the hero one from the man's bearing, and, as he was still alive, that argued for him never being hurt in a duel. He did not actually believe Professor Skywalker had ever been wed, so that left...

"Your children's names," he guessed.

"You seem like a warrior," Romeo answered, sticking to the flattering side of his process of elimination. "And, as one, you might well have such a nickname. And if you'd been beaten in a duel, you likely would not be here."

"I don't think you named your children after people from Fandom," Lana said.

"Mainly because I think the other two facts sound like you, rather than thinking it unlikely you'd have named the kids after people here," Lana said logically.

Teyla thought for a few moments, and listened to some of the other answers first. "The third statement," she finally said.

Rikku considered. "I'm ... gonna say the first one. Partly 'cause no one else did? And partly cause ... I dunno. It seems like a strange name to give someone. I don't want my heroes to be fearless."

Amber took a moment to study Master Skywalker and she considered thoughtfully the type of person he was. Since this was only her second class with him she couldn't say for sure which was the lie but she chose the one that seemed most likely. "I don't believe you named your children after people you met in Fandom."

"Someone has to have beaten you," Evey said after a moment.

Hoshi could usually tell what was a lie because she could hear the slight variations in speech patterns. However, Anakin was really good at this and Hoshi couldn't sense a difference in the three statements.

"I'm going to guess the first one, because I can easily believe the other two," she said.
