Criminal Justice (As Taught By A Criminal) - Period 3 - Monday 01/14

Why yes, yes Deadpool was sitting on the desk again today. But there were other things on the desk. Like a camera and a lot of paper. And ink.

Weird, no?

"Morning kids! Today we're learning about something very fun. Booking procedure. Or, ya know, the fun bits of it to me at least. Who wants to learn about lots and lots of paperwork, after all? Bo~oring!"

Hopping off the desk, he started to pace in front of the class.

"First up today is the mugshot. Or, as I like to call it, the best way to make or break a career in Hollywood by looking like a homeless heroin addict!" Deadpool shook his head sadly. "No one wants to end up lookin' like Nick Nolte or Hugh Grant, so I suggest practicing your look before they actually toss you in to get that picture taken. It'll be like modeling! With police! And crimes!"

Really.

Just like it.

"And second! Fingerprints. Which is just code for letting you kids run wild and free with paper and ink. Because no one really cares about learning about whirls and all stuff. You just want to get straight to the finding your classmates' finger prints so you can see if they're stealing food from the common rooms. Isn't that right? For shame, common room food stealer. Just go to Turtle&Canary and buy your own."

"Last of all!" He bounced on his heels, looking at the class. "Haley Joel, English Petey... Welcome to being my TAs. I expect you to rule with an iron fist."

"You look kinda confused," Chad commented when he started looking around for a partner and noticed one of the new kids.

"Actual ink," Jen said, a tiny hint of what could only be described as 'ZOMGSHINY' in her voice. "Actual non-digital fingerprinting!"

That tiny hint of ZOMGSHINY left a tiny hint of a grin in the corner of Chad's mouth. "Never worked with it before?" he asked, as he himself was picking up one of the fingerprinting kits and examining it with a slight touch of nostalgia.

"Read all about it, but we haven't used anything like this in centuries." Yes, Jen was trying very hard not to gibber in police-geek glee.

"An' I've had to use 'em way too much when I was younger," Chad commented, giving it one last look before setting it down. "M'Chad, by the way. Nice to meet you."

"Jen," she said, holding out her hand, and wow, he was huge. "And you too."

She'd quirked an eyebrow at his mention of using them a lot. "Former hobby, or . . . ?"

Chad took Jen's hand in a firm, slightly engulfing shake and grunted an acknowledgment of the whole thing.

"Got in trouble a lot as a kid," he explained, a mite sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck a bit.

But you're still a kid, Jen wanted to say, but refrained. "So you probably know more about how these actually work than I do," she said instead. "No offense meant."

"None taken," Chad said, shaking his head a little. It was true; why would he have taken offense to it? "It's pretty easy; you just take the ink pad," he grabbed on, opening it so he could demonstrate as he talked, "roll the end of the finger, like this. You do it like this so there's good surface coverage, and then repeat the same move on the paper, like this. And, see? Fingerprint." He shrugged.

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Wow," Jen said, and yes, that was a tiny squee. "Actual ink fingerprints! I'm sorry, this really shouldn't be that exciting, but . . . wow!"

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, and, really? The excitement over ink fingerprints was just too damn cute. Chad grinned a little. "I'm gonna assume you come from somewhere that has all this digitalized and stuff, like in the movies, right?"

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Digital was five centuries ago," Jen said with a shrug. "Everybody's on file, anyway, and it's not like there was that much crime except for the . . ."

She swallowed and added in a much lower tone, "The mutant outcasts from society. Not surprising they would, it's not like anyone would've willingly given them anything. So fingerprinting? Never even an issue, really."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at least that answer was a little more comfortable than if Jen had said that, well, no one had fingerprints anymore or they did that weird retina-scanning thing that always made Chad wince uncomfortably if he thought about it. He grunted thoughtfully; he honestly had a difficult time picturing a place that didn't really have crime...

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it had been on its way to not having crime, at least, and then the whole mess with Ransik had happened.

Luckily, she hadn't mentioned the retina-scanning. They still did that, and it was quite possibly even freakier since it was completely devoid of the red-laser light show, or even any sound.

"It's not that great, honestly," she admitted.

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well...Chad wasn't going to say anything, but...

He gave Jen a tiny, apologetic sort of smile. "Sounds kinda boring, really."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Jen reached for the ink pad and rolled her thumb across it, experimentally, then transferred the print to the paper -- which got another slight grin out of her.

"It really kind of was. I like it here a lot more."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Nice one," Chad said, complimenting the fingerprint. It really was a good one, he felt. "And, yeah. Here is great. I think it's probably my favourite outta all the places I've lived."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah?" Jen glanced sidelong at him, then tried again with her index finger. "How many places have you lived?"

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"About...four now," Chad said. "Including here. Which I guess isn't much, but it's been pretty, uhhh....globe spanning. Born in Japan, moved to Mexico. Back to Japan, and now here, in the States."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"More places than I've been," Jen assured him. "There was Millennium City, then Silver Hills --" this with notable wistfulness -- "and now here."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Only one more," Chad pointed out, "and Japan was twice, although it was different places in Japan."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Jen said, her brow furrowed in concentration as she inked and printed the rest of her right hand. "But you live in the fun millennium."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
And that definitely earned a quirked eyebrow. "...the fun millennium?" He looked at the fingerprint kit, wondering if it was the source of such a title. "What millennium are from that, err, isn't...the fun one?"

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] time-flyer-5.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it was part of the fun, sure.

"The next one?" she offered. "I didn't want to assume you were from right now."

Re: Taking Prints

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no," Chad assured her. "I am. Kinda rare around here, though, I guess."
