Applied Inventiontronics, Period 4 - Week 2

As students walk into class, they'd see Glitch standing behind his desk with notes in hand. They were mostly in his hands because the desk had a pile of Papay fruit on it next to the sign in sheet, free for the taking.

"Hello!" He seemed a lot less visibly nervous this time, which was probably a good thing. "Today's lesson is about power sources for inventions. A big part of even thinking up what you'll invent is deciding on how to make it go, and, well, there are a lot of options here."

Glitch looked down at his notes, then back at the class.

"One of my favorites to start with is wind-ups and clockwork. You turn the key or lever on the outside, and it winds a thin piece of metal, storing energy. When it un-winds, it turns gears that turn other gears that make a part of it move. There's also things that are powered by steam and heat, with turbine or piston engines, but they're a lot more difficult. And bigger, too. Using the force from water or wind to turn the gears can work on something big or small."

Another glance at his notes.

"Uhm, let's see... Electricity is a good one, so long as you take care to wire everything properly. Grounding yourself when you test it is a good idea, too." There might have been a slight shudder then, at the memory of some very unwelcome electric shock. "You can also use chemical reactions to power something, like that little drinking bird shaped doohickey. Wouldn't recommend that one unless you're already familiar with them. Chemicals, I mean." The clarification threw him off for a moment. Where was he? Oh, yes. "The last one I'll mention is magic. If there's a safe way you can find a way to make your invention work with that, then you're free to do so."

It took a few moments of shuffling the papers before Glitch got to the one he needed.

"Now, I know that a lot of people here come from different worlds, so today I'd like you to do two things. First, if there's a power source from where you come from that wasn't mentioned, share a little about it with the rest of the class and answer each other's questions about them. Second, make note of which ones you think you'd like to use in your invention. If you don't have an idea for that yet, then just take note of the ones that interest you."

He sat down at his Papay fruit covered desk and waited for the discussion to begin.

[ooc: Wait for the OCD is up, as usual!]

Liir was paying rapt attention, mostly because he was trying to see what in the discussion might be useful for his very well thought out but not actually planned out invention.

Bridge is still with the putting un in unkempt, but he's doing his best to focus and take notes.

Still coming up with ideas for what to do, Jaina was definitely listening in case anything jumped out at her.

Also, she found it impossible to not pay attention to Glitch.

Of course A.J. is taking notes. He still was drawing a blank on his invention, so he was really hoping maybe talking about some of this stuff would help inspire something. His notes were rather frantically made, since he kept diverting into little doodles illustration of the things Professor Glitch was talking about and spending way too much time on doing the shading.

Zack took careful notes.

Mac is just the kind of girl who always takes notes. Is it really surprising she is today, too?

Anders was definitely paying attention. Because this, like last week's lecture, didn't make a tech rookie like himself feel intimidated and go "OMFG brain shut down now."

Notes, notes, notes. Sokka took lots of 'em.

Then he raised his hand. "Uh... Why would anyone use clockwork when you could use electricity instead? Are there advantages?"

Rikku was fascinated. Lightning usually fried their mech droids, and here it was powering them? Dude.

Rodney took notes on each form of energy and drew a big circle around 'electricity.' He kind of wished he could do magic since that seemed pretty impressive, but he figured he could do just as well using more conventional means. He was a genius, after all.

It was acceptable to power technology with magic in this class?

That was all Doom needed to hear. So he barely payed attention to the rest of class.

Re: Class Discussion 1/14

[identity profile] new-to-liirness.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Would his invention even require power? He'd need a working design for how to protect memories, the ways, before he could come up with a reasonable manner to do it with an invention. Or even what form memories took. Was this for the kind that was in the heart and the head? Or the kind that could be extracted with a brain? Was there a difference?

"The goal of the invention would be a big deal for the power choice too, wouldn't it?" Willow asked. "Because it's no use inventing something that needs electricity for somebody who doesn't have it. Plus if they're close to water - ouch."

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Andrew looked about and asked, "Does anyone know of a good alternative to jet fuel that would still provide an adequate if not equal exothermic output?"

"There's always muscle power," Sokka pointed out. "And also chi -- life energy. On my world, there are a lot of Earthbender-powered inventions in the city of Ba Sing Se."

Of course, Liir was there after class. It was as much to see Professor Ambrose as to ask about something.

"Sir?"
