Library [10/01]

Having received a ~~handwavey~~ message from Bridge, Karal had come in to open up the library today.

Altra leapt up on the counter and promptly started to snooze while Karal looked over the books that needed to be shelved.

Karal was checking in the returned books and drinking his tea.

Altra was getting into the whole snoozing thing, and was starting to snore.

Checked in books had to be reshelved, which was what Karal was doing.

Altra was now lying on the desk with his paws in the air.

Karal's not here - he's off in Ethics class.

Altra was awake and sitting on the desk, grooming one paw. He might help you, he might not. He was a cat, after all.

Karal had soup and crackers, which he was sharing with Altra. Well, not the crackers, but Altra was very fond of soup.

The library's closed to all but other aides, invited guests, and the librarian.

Karal was reorganising the desk.

Altra had been ousted, and had, grudgingly, relocated to the top of a shelf.

All his work was done, so Karal was happily engrossed in a book.

Altra was back on the desk, reading the book upside down. His occasional sardonic comment was for Karal only.

Sleep very soon. Back around 3-4 pm EST.

It was inevitable that Romeo would eventually find his way to the books, and he was pleased to see the religion class TA behind the counter.

"Good day," he greeted, pleasantly enough. "Are there books of poetry about?"

Still bearing the bruise on his jaw from yesterday, the librarian found his way out of his office. ~~Where he was hiding.~~

Perhaps today would not end with him being attacked or threatened.

He paused, looking at the cat and then the teenager at the desk and tilted his head questioningly. "Bridge?"

Altra snorted and rolled over onto his side, but didn't look as if he'd woken up.

"No, I'm Karal," he said politely. "Austreben, from Karse. Bridge wasn't able to be here today, so he asked me to open the library for him." This had to be the new librarian. "I hope that's all right."

"Good day," Karal replied with a smile, recognising the other boy from class. "There are a number of them. Was there anything in particular you were looking for?"

Interesting cat.

"Perfectly so," He said easily, smiling faintly at Karal. "Merely ascertaining who all my aides are. Will he be back for his shift next week?

Romeo thought for a moment, head on hand. "Something modern, I believe. Modern, but with the beauty of the writers of old."

Karal smiled back, relieved. "I'm sure he will, sir. He takes his responsibilities very seriously. If he can't, I don't mind taking it again, and I'll still be here for my day tomorrow."

Altra opened one eye bright blue and fixed it on the librarian. "This is Altra," Karal said, seeing he was finally awake. "He comes with me sometimes."

[ooc: is it okay if Altra talks in The Operative's head?]

"Good to know. I will have to meet him next week then. Since he should be the only aide I do not yet recognize, it won't be difficult," The librarian said dryly.

"A pleasure," He said, nodding at the cat.

"I will try," Karal said after a moment, rubbing his temple with one hand. "I'm not all that familiar with either modern or ancient poetry from this world." He led the way to the books on poetry, gesturing at several shelves. "These are poets from the last few decades. In fact the only poet I know of is Shakespeare, though he's not at all modern. Someone told me I should read his sonnets."

"Shakespeare?" Romeo asked, wrinkling his nose. "Perhaps. I have read Marlowe and Donne from that era, but in my world Shakespeare is little esteemed. I shall look through the other books, though."

"My name, by the way, is Romeo, though doubtless you heard that in class."

Karal chuckled, relaxing a little bit more. "This is very true."

Anything else he was going to say was interrupted by Altra rolling to his feet, stretching and yawning to show very sharp teeth, and addressing the new librarian. :The same,: he said. :And even if I'm not with Karal, I'm no more than a few seconds away. Should he have need of me.:

"I did, but I still should have introduced myself. I'm Karal, from Karse, and it's good to meet you," he said. " I've not read any, but the boy who recommended him was quite taken with his sonnets."

The librarian kept the same small smile on his face, no more reacting to the voice in his head than what seemed to be a small threat.

He might be getting used to them.

"I will keep that in mind, Altra." He turned back toward Karal. "Would you care for some tea? I have made a fresh pot, but it seems so few students here enjoy it."

Something was terribly wrong with the past for this reason.

Karal gave Altra a repressive look, which had absolutely no effect, and nodded gratefully. "I would love a cup of tea, please. And feel free to ignore Altra," he added, which made the Firecat snort again and start pointedly grooming a paw. "He's being particuarly cat-like today. He's not usually so rude."

"I am finding myself more and more used to such things recently," He remarked, nodding and going into the office for a moment to fetch the tea and coffee cups.

This weekend he would venture into town.

And hopefully not find himself punched or threatened, but he somehow doubted that.

"May I ask how you came into the company of such a creature," He asked, pouring tea for himself and Karal. And pausing slightly as if to ask if Altra needed any.

The cat did talk, it did not seem so far fetched.

Altra's ears went forward. :Tea would be appreciated,: he said in clear tones of approval.

You are such a cat at times. Karal picked up his tea with a smile of thanks. "I'm a priest, of Vkandis Sunlord," he explained, gesturing at his robes. "Altra is an avatar of Vkandis, who He sent to be my companion and guide while I was still a novice."

He poured a cup, placing it on the desk by Altra.

"Ah, I see." Sipping from his cup, he closed his eyes slightly. "A man of the cloth."

Someone who still believed.

"Should I continue to expect things such as avatars of gods while here?"

The term 'man of the cloth' was unknown to Karal, but he understood it from context. "I'm not certain. Altra and I will be staying here, but I'm the only priest on the island, and I believe Altra is the only avatar."

Said avatar was currently sticking his nose in his tea, and getting it all over his whiskers while he lapped at it.
