Fandom Invasions Class #1 (Thursday, period 4)

John was waiting at the front of the classroom, leaning on his desk as the students filed in.

"Good morning," he said with a smile, when everyone was settled. "Welcome to Fandom Invasions. I'm sure all of you have noticed by now that Fandom is a rather unusual place. It's what makes it such a good fit for so many of us who don't really fit in elsewhere, but it also has a downside. Namely, that invasions of varying kinds happen on a disturbingly regular basis. If you haven't been through one yet, chances are very good that you will before you leave. The purpose of this class is to make sure you're prepared when that happens by looking at invasions of the past.

"If you look at the syllabus, you'll see a list of which past events we'll be focusing on and when. We'll be making extensive use of simulations and for that reason, we'll be meeting in the Danger Shop starting next week and every week thereafter.

"For this first class, I want to get to know you and your experience with the stranger aspects of Fandom. So I'd like to go around the room and have everyone introduce themselves, tell how long they've been in Fandom, and talk about the weirdest thing that's happened to them since they've been here.

"I'll start," John said with a slightly wolfish smile. "My name is John Winchester and this is my second year teaching here. One of many weird things that I've done in the time I've been here is stalk and kill a genuine saber tooth cat practically right on my doorstep. More recently, me and my boys had to go get our Christmas presents back from a little green thief who talked in rhyme and called himself the grinch." He looked around and picked a student at random. "Next?"

When everyone had had their turn, John continued, "As you can see, there is no lack of weirdness to go around. Hopefully by the end of this class, you'll be as prepared as possible to deal with the next strange thing that happens." He looked around at the class. "Any questions?"

Alex grinned brightly and nodded. "I did, yes. I thought it might good to take, if these invasions are a regular thing."

Hoshi nodded in agreement. "The major invasions seem to be pretty rare, but I've seen a lot of the smaller weird things. I got attacked by a vampire and then had to fight off a kidnapping monkey all in the same week," she said. "Then there's the time a bunch of us woke up 20 years older, thinking we were at our high school reunion. Oh, and my date for homecoming was a frog."

Alex listened closely, kind of shocked at what she was hearing. "Wow, that must have been quite the experience," she admitted. "Seems like you've been through a lot."

"Weird stuff just keeps happening to me," said Hoshi. "After the vampire thing, I was actually afraid to leave the dorms at night for a very long time. But then I started learning ways to protect myself and it helped boost my confidence a bit. My friend Robin even helped me find a book on defensive spells, though they haven't really worked for me."

She chuckled. "Robin is the homecoming date, by the way."

"I hear that," Alex chuckled, knowing the feeling. "I would be, too, I can guarantee you that. Glad to hear that," she smiled, meaning it.

Alex smirked. "I met Robin the other night. He's quite the energetic frog." She thought he was adorable.

"He's a sweetheart," said Hoshi. "I was afraid of going to homecoming because of the crowds, but Robin took really good care of me and found plenty of open spaces so I didn't feel crowded. He's teaching me how to speak Frog too."

"Yeah, he sure seems it," Alex nodded. "Oh wow, that was really great of him. How to speak frog, really? That's so cool!"

"I have a thing for picking up new languages," explained Hoshi. "Frog is a bit more obscure, but I'm having fun with it. There's another girl I met who speaks a kind of universal language. She can even talk to things and they do what she tells them to."

"The only other language I know is Spanish and that's because my mom's Spanish," Alex explained. "I can imagine it would be," she admitted, wondering what it would sound like to speak frog. "Really? Wow, that's got to be cool."
