How to Survive Your Own Cooking [Class 1]

"Hello, everyone," Lulu said, smiling softly, as the students came in to the home ec room. "Welcome to How to Survive Your Own Cooking. For those who don't know me, my name is Lulu; you may call me Professor if you wish, but my name will also suffice. I'd also like to take this opportunity to introduce my teaching assistant, Liir."

As people settled in, Lulu passed around the class syllabus. "Today, we're going to start with something rather simple," she said. "First, introductions; it's best that we learn about each other if we're going to be spending a semester together. I'd like you all to share your name, where you're from, and what kind of experience you have cooking."

After the introductions had finished, Lulu gestured to the different food stations. "As you can see," she said, "there are seven stations set up today. At each station, you will find a large salad bowl and a package of romaine lettuce. Divide yourselves into groups of two; each group is responsible for preparing one salad. Instructions on preparing the lettuce are on each package. You should use three different moddable vegetables, a protein, such as bacon or boiled eggs, and a salad dressing, all of which you can find at the front of the room. Dice the vegetables before adding them to the salad -- that means to cut them into square chunks, like this." Lulu grabbed a green pepper from the selection and demonstrated how to dice it, resulting in fairly large chunks. "In some cases, I would recommend saving the pips, the seeds of the pepper, to use in the recipe, but in the case of salads you should discard them.

"Most of all," Lulu continued, as the students divided themselves up, "try to have fun. If you have any questions, feel free to ask."

At the end of the class, as the students tidied up, Lulu said, "Over the course of the next week, I'd like you each to make a salad and share it with one other person. This will be your perfectly handwaveable homework each week -- to make and share what you've made in class. When you come in next week, be prepared to tell us what ingredients you used, and how it was received by the person you shared it with."

Tamaki shook back with equal enthusiasm. "I'm new," he said with a smile. "I just got here on saturday evening, actually."

"Oh, okay then. That's good!" It was nice to not be completely clueless. "So, uh...what do we do now?" Demyx eyed the lettuce warily.

Tamaki opened his mouth as if to say something, a scholarly look plastered all over his face, raising a finger for dramatic effect. Just as quickly, the finger fell and his face went blank.

"Well," he finally replied, "Professor Lulu said that there are instructions on each lettuce package." He paused, again for dramatic effect, and then thrust a perfectly pointed index finger at the package sitting on the counter. "But of course, we should read them!"

"..." Demyx frowned at him. Tamaki reminded of someone, but he wasn't sure who yet. "Instructions? Why? How about we just throw stuff in the bowl and see what happens?"

After a moment, Tamaki decided that Demyx was absolutely right. Thinking about it further, he called into question his lineage. He was the son of a rich and powerful man, and rich and powerful men had exquisite culinary tastes! Appreciation of fine foods must be in his very blood, so why wouldn't food preparation be far behind? He was a man of culture! Why in the world would he need instructions?!

"I agree! Who needs instructions?! We are chefs!" Okay, so that was bending the truth a little. However, Tamaki was off on one of his delusional conquests again, and he tended to be oblivious of the truth when that happened.

"Maybe not chefs," Demyx ammended, ripping open the bag of lettuce and dumping it into the bowl. "But we're still great, right? Really, what could go wrong??" This had to be easier than trying to avoid a flying Keyblade.

"You doubt our greatness? I'm shocked," Tamaki chided, although his voice remained cheery. "We're greater than great! Now, how about some red peppers?" He picked up one of the vegetables and rummaged in the station's drawers until he found a knife. He'd never chopped anything before, but how hard could it be?

"I don't really like them, but if you do..." Demyx watched Tamaki dubiously. "Are you sure about this? That looks sharp." As someone who'd been around - and on the business end - sharp pointies a lot, he had good reason to be nervous.

"Ah, well, salad partner, I won't put them in if you don't eat them. That would be impolite," he said smoothly, setting the pepper back down. "Is there something that you would suggest instead?"

"I dunno?" Demyx scratched his head. "I'm not really picky usually, I just don't really like spicy stuff most of the time."

Tamaki clucked his tongue. "Demyx, red peppers aren't spicy like jalapeno peppers or anything like that. I thought they would add a vibrant color to our artful salad," he chuckled. "How about something like carrots, then? Carrots are colorful too~!"
